welfare state of Alaska
I'm all for more roads so that all Alaskans can enjoy our state - not just those that can afford expensive planes or air transportation. Opening the haul road years ago was a great step forward in that direction.

Only a private road, and exporting our raw materials and jobs is a step in the wrong direction - we are doing too much of that already, and our state suffers economically. Our raw materials should be processed in state be it minerals, petroleum, lumber, or fish.

The other important considerable is that the state budget receives relatively very little from the mining industry, similar to the meager funding it receives from commercial fishing, tourism, and timber. Since minerals are a non-renewable resource, they should be taxed at the same or higher level as petroleum.

I find it ironic that some of the same people that complain about Alaska being Californianized are the same ones who want more roads. Not just on this forum but other places too. A big part of what makes Alaska Alaska is that it takes some effort and creativity to get to many areas. If you just want to be able to drive everywhere, perhaps this ain't the state for you.

That sure doesn't hurt, but lots of $$$$$ helps quite a bit too. In fact I'd venture to say to get to a lot of places it helps the most.

I like easy access areas until too many people show up and ruin it.

I'm against the road or any other new road project including the bypass around Cooper Landing

There is nothing any of us can do. Roads will be built and people will use them. I, for one are for roads to lands in Alaska that is not already protected. Why, because those areas are already protected.

We keep making more people and if we are going to make more people, those people are going to need places to live, work and play.

If we keep making more people but don't open up access to land for them to live, work and play, (land that has already been set aside for those things and not preservation in this case) we are all going to be splitting up the places that we already have with more people. Our individual slices of the pie all become smaller, society becomes poorer as a whole, more people are crowded into what's available.

Originally, the haul road was meant for only pipeline access. Now it's used for all kinds of great things. Mostly, it allows us to spread out a little. We have more access to more places to live, work and play, and it's affordable.

I have noticed some of the people that are against the Ambler road, and roads like it, already live in, or access those places in other ways and are trying to limit access by other people. I don't see anything wrong with that, it's human nature.

Since there have been human beings, we have been spreading out. That's a fact.

You are not going to stop it. IMO.

doesnt everyone?
Not really

When I lived in Juneau there were people fighting to protect (protect=prevent humans from using) the trees, the animals, the fish in order to keep everything "pure". EXCEPT when it came to building a road up the coast to Skagway, they all wanted that without a thought being given to the trees, animals or fish because it would save them a few dollars from using the ferry or flying
