Finally finished up my brand new king salmon trolling set-ups for a friend and fishing buddy.
I call these the "Heazlett Special"
I started with Berkley big game 40# leader line.
Then tied up some double hook sliding rigs as I know my friend is a fan of a second stinger hook on his jigs.
The front hooks Is adjustable, so if you're getting short strikes you can lengthen the distance between the hooks.
I figured it should be flashy like my buddies new classic hot rod his 1970 Dodge Challenger he got last year.
So I used twinkle skirts under the hoochie and a gold plated #4 Vibrolite blade for extra flash.
I put reflective tape on the back of each blade and two wedding rings (as found on wedding ring spinners) in front of the hootchie to reflect some of the color from the back of the blade.
I made these in different sizes in case the fish show a preference.
To finish them off I used an American made #5 Roscoe barrel swivel and a medium topwater speed clip to connect to the flasher.
I think the speed clips will eliminate a fail point a snap swivel might present.
I hope they work well!
I started making a version of a Wicked Lures "King Killer" a few months ago and really thought I could make something more of my own. So here we are!

Those look fishy, Chris. You need some pics hanging from the jaw of a fat feeder king!

Good looking rigs! Where do you market your rigs. All the components you are using are the highest quality. Not interested in trolling them for salmon. I'm a bottom halibut troller.

Yep, not for sale.
I do try to use the highest quality components.
Why? Because quality matters to me and also because I can!

When i had the ocean boat i put a lot of effort into Kings and became quite proficient on them. My hands down favorite go to lure was a Coho killer (any color) on a 15 inch leader behind a 12 inch flasher, green of course. These were trolled right at 100 ft and i never had a problem limiting if there were fish in the water.
All you have to do to convince your self is rig one up and only let it down 3 ft or so and watch it run!!! It will make you smile!

Small hotchies in place of the killer will do it too.

I agree with you, in October in Homer I like to use my UV purple haze flasher and UV purple Coho killer for kings. Just got to find where they are, thats the hardest part. For coho, a dodger and a short 15" to the hootchie works great also. The longer the leader, the less action a hootchie will have. Nice kings. Im so pissed they let our kings go extinct up here.

I tested my lures next to a Coho killer in a similar setup to what you are describing.
Purple coho killer=0 Heazlett special=1 nice king landed and 1 lost.
Herring= 1 small king.
Who knows why, but that was my result for a day of testing in Kachemak Bay last February trolling amongst a few other boats.

Dang only 15" between the flasher and the spoon?! I gotta shorten my stuff up. Most of my gear is 3 to 5 feet back from the flasher.

It really depends on what your fishing.
Something like a hoochie that has no action of its own needs to be rigged closer to the flasher for the action it gives.
Some of my lures have a blade to give them their own action, so you can run a longer leader from your flasher.

Nice fish Chris!
I never fished purple anything; so when i say any color on those killers i was using white, black and green, green being a favorite and always behind a white or green 12” flasher. All treble hooks were replaced with a single sickle style hook!!!

Yes, 15” is short but that’s the point; you are bringing them to strike out of aggression, not because they’re hungry! And on that subject, once i had hardware dialed i never fished bait due to my own personal laziness. Apart from being messy and time consuming; you had to check it often and a short strike left you wondering, “is my bait still there?”.
Hardware was fast, clean and allowed me to just drive around looking over my shoulder periodically while visiting! Another key was fishing deep, with my set up i could troll 350ft. easily but found 100ft to produce better and it was easier on the gear.
I fished this gear for all Salmon from early May thru August.

P.s, it’s hard to fish 100ft deep in Kachmack, after 90ft i found the bottom too often! For me Seward and Prince William was the norm.

If you know what your doing; im not telling you anything however if your driving around out there watching other people catch fish, this might be helpful!

And now: i wont take over Chris’s thread; he’s a good man who i worked with for several years. He’s honest and he tries hard, buy his bait! If he says it will catch fish, it will catch fish.

Thanks!
The purple color was one my buddy who owns the boat had luck with in the past.
That's why it was chosen.

Yup, we were fishing between 40' and 55' most of this day off of the bluffs.

Just an FYI I don't sell tackle anymore.
But, as an old friend if you ever need any I would certainly gift you some!
