over 12% this year. Nice to see my money is going to pay for the cop busting J walkers at the sullivan while you can get crack at carrs just up the street. Or the plowing of my street, but then again the kids these days have some beautiful schools. I know they appreciate all the art work and custom wood work and of course they are doing thier homework on the highspeed internet and state of the art computers. Ugggggh:(:(

.....Don't get me started on valuation vs. resale......

Not to get you started, but I think you can challenge the assessed value.

I haven't heard of that being successful since the last real estate crash in the mid-80's, but we might be there soon.

But it was my impression that Anchorage real estate hasn't lost value like real estate here in the Valley (which hasn't lost value yet like it did in the 80's).

That's true. But I see a problem coming with the high cost of utilities, gasoline, and food. This could very well depress the housing market in Squarebanks and Los Anchorage. I was talking to a banker recently, and she told me that the construction materials cost so much these days, that some folks can't simply afford construction loans. Some contractors are switching from copper to plastic lines. Copper is very expensive right now.

The main problem I see if the high assessment values, and the huge budgets local governments create each year.

My value also went up by about 1% while my taxes went up by 8%. Meanwhile, the union that "represents" me has officially endorsed Begich for U.S. Senate.

Well if you pay union dues your supporting him too;)

Yeah, I'm aware. But if I want to teach, I have to pay those dues. We don't live in a right-to-work state, so I must be a member of AEA to be a teacher in the Anchorage School District.

My house is up 1.01%; taxes are up 9.6%.

I don't think unions should endorse candidates; I'm glad AEA doesn't do that, NEA does though.

I am assuming that is not true of all districts, because when I taught for Dillingham City School District, I didn't have to be a member (of course, I was shunned for not doing so, but even then the NEA was only an arm of the Democrat Party).

One could carry over RMiller's thread title from the fishing forum: "How do you straighten your leaders?":)

Not long after Bill Clinton was elected to the Presidency I was on the phone with a friend in Arkansas who expressed his relief that Clinton won.

I asked him why he was so happy since I knew he hated Clinton, and he told me that, "at least this gets him out of Arkansas".

I guess one should always look at the bright side of things............

When I first started teaching you could opt out of the union (no dues/no vote) and a teacher at Gruening Middle School did this and he was shunned the same way.

I think that "relief" continued on when they chose New York as home after the Presidency.

Mine dropped.....

Mine dropped.....

Mine dropped about $50 total (about 1.3%), but that is only because I qualified for the residential property exemption this year when I did not qualify last year. Otherwise it would have been an increase.

Our value dropped about 1.3% (property went up, building went down). Taxes went up about 9.4%. What really bothers me is our land has gone up 57% in two years (06-08). I think we are in the same union Brian, I wrote our busioness manager and told him exactly what I thought about about endorsing Mr. Begich. Of course this is the same union, on the national level, that endorsed Clinton. Schools want bonds for maintenance but no one is stopping the daily abuse to the schools and the grounds.

I guess we are a tad off topic, but what the he__....

I don't know about your union, but I checked with mine (ASEA) a while back regarding political endorsements and donations. Apparently, the union can endorse whoever they see fit, but they can't use the general union dues to support them financially or for any expenses related to the endorsement. They can only draw from funds given to the union specifically for that purpose.

Better read the fine print again;)
