Hey everyone, first posting here.

My dad and I are looking at potentially heading up to Alaska to do some fishing. Interested in fishing saltwater as well as going for salmon in rivers. Never done either of those things so apologies if that’s not very helpful.

We’d be interested in a self guided week-ish long trip. I’ve looked at Alaska Wilderness Outfitters along with Sea Hawk Air. Those two particularly because of their seclusion with the cabin being isolated, rather than as part of a larger lodge. Haven’t been able to find any other places that offer something like that. Numerous other self-guided spots but none where you’re by yourself.

Anyone have insights on either of these outfitters or recommendations for something else? Appreciate any responses!

Seahawk has always been good people. Other than that, I got nothing.

State of Alaska has cabin rentals all over. There are some just lout of valdez in shoup bay. Have to have a boat to get there. Valdez has boat rentals. Don’t need a guide or rent a boat and set up a tent in various bays in prince william sound. Just buy a map

Or rent a boat and sleep on it. Just need food and water. I do it all the time. Go out and fish all day then find a quiet place to anchor out of the wind to sleep. Need to know the weather forecasts. And a chart

A good question is what are your experiences in fishing for Alaskan fish/fish species and what are your experiences in river and marine boating?
These will help determine what to recommend to you.
With little/no experience you may go home empty handed and disappointed trying to do all of this solo vs hiring a guide for at least one day to show you the basics.
But if your an experienced salmon fisherman elsewhere you might do well on your own.
With a lot of boating experience in the salt you may find renting a boat worthwhile. With little to none it could be dangerous should inclement weather/ rough seas arise.

I would charter for a day on the saltwater. If you want a cooler full of fish. Then have some rivers maped out to chase salmon, you have to checked out the time of the runs. I did it and would do it again . My freezer ran out of halibut and sockeyes after 2 years.

Ok, all the Comments above are Spot-On,,,,,, and I STRONGLY suggest you Acquaint Ones-Self with our Mr. or Mrs. Brown-Bear,,,,,, ie... (Mr. Bruin) because where-ever there are Fish, be it Salt or Fresh Water, you will find Mr. Bruin, and when this Happens, (and It Will) having an Alaskan Fishing Guide at your side can and will,,,,, MAKE all the difference.
I'll leave it at that, as they say,,,,,,, Balls in your Court.

Here is a day trip option if you are in the Valdez area. http://valdezoutfitters.com/rental-boats/
