I've had this on my bucket list for a number of years. Need to finally make it happen. I know it's not the best meat, but I would love to get out with a charter who can get on some salmon sharks.

I've done the usual googling, but nothing is coming up. Any of y'all have charter recommendations for shark fishing?

Salmon shark is quite good if processed promptly and correctly. Knowledgeable people will butcher the shark immediately while it is still in the water, and leave it in the water to completely cool out.

It will probably cost alot because i would have to assume it would be a private charter. I don't think charters run scheduled shark trips. I'd call crazy rays or maybe valdez outfitters. I saw a picture from crazy rays who got one last year while halibut fishing.

I've always gone out of Valdez. The guy I went with was awesome, but I don't know if he's still in business--Dan Eames, the Faithful.

My understanding is that most charters will not target them any more. For a while (10-15 years back) they were abundant and the demand was there. However, something changed and they are no longer as abundant as they once were. I suspect most charters will require a full boat booking (at the least) and that some will just say no.

When I had the desire, I contacted Dan (or maybe Dave) with Orion Charters out of Valdez. He was very knowledgeable and ran a good operation.

Good luck!

My son and I went out for salmon shark in Cook Inlet. The skipper did NOT want a full boat. Shark fishing isn't like halibut fishing.

How do you prepare the spiny dogfish? My charter captain said they taste like pee, due to the excretion of urine through their flesh. Weird!
That's what all shark taste like if they aren’t immediately and properly cleaned. In Mexico just about all fish tacos are made with spiny dogfish.

Do you remember where you went to try and get them, I've never seen them in Cook Inlet.
We were just outside Kachemak Bay. I have seen salmon sharks as far up the Inlet as Nikiski.

Found a dead salmon shark floating in Port of Valdez year before last, about a 12 footer.

Spiny dogfish have long been the fish used for fish and chips in the UK...which resulted in them being seriously overfished.

Thanks. I'll poke around in Valdez.
Which reminds me, a few years ago I was out in my Kingfisher trolling for silvers, and there were salmon sharks all around us. I had one trailing my downrigger weight--it looked like a submarine on my Panoptix sonar!

So they are still around, I just don't know if anyone is chartering for them. Someone mentioned Orion, yes, Dave there at least used to go for them--I've been out with him, he's first class as well.
