Hello Abitibi !!

That animal is a spotted seal, (valuable) in many different ways & uses.

Food, fuel, clothing, Arts & Crafts !! nothing is wasted !!

Seal skin is waterproof and extremely durable and warm for hats, mittens, gloves, boots, pants vests, parky's.

Fall Whaling in Barrow - was more than we were capable of handeling !

It was much too rough for us 'rookies'.

Motion sickness supreme !! for two days. that was the extent of our involvement in the fall hunt.

The highlight of the (successfull ) hunt of 22 whales was a first ever strike by a 9 year old Captain !!

The first two days for us was - almost - and not quite.

catch.jpg

The all too familiar pattern on the water - of a whale diving !! We were too late to strike this whale.

The violent rocking of the boat - rendered image stabilazation - null & void. It was extremely difficult to create images with the boat rocking and pitching in different directions constantly.

Just missed striking this whale - we arrived seconds too late for the strike. But the all too familiar pattern on the water of a whale diving was all that remained !! Our captain had to go to Anchorage on day 4 so that ended the hunt for us - thank goodness, we had no business being out on those crafts - motion sickness was severe, and all over the deck of the boat !!

This year - there was a 'first ever' event that is indeed worthy of the RECORD BOOKS.

A 9 year old 4th grader - Paul Patkotak - Kappii (harpoon) his first whale !! 32 foot 7 inches.
His uncle Qulliuq Pebley, is captain of the Panigeo crew.

Children learn 'incredible' skills at very early age(s) !! This is further proof of children excelling in the lifestyle of the Inupiaq culture.

How about that !! If it wasn't published in the news paper - I sincerly doubt that some would ever believe it !!

Shooting directly into the sun - is the most dramatic form of lighting - it is also the most difficult to expose correctly. No meter can correctly handle this type lighting situation.

SUN.jpg

100 ISO - EV 15 = 1/125 @ F 5.6 !! That is the exact value(s), I always used when using film. Perfect results everytime. BUT WITH DIGITAL those values are not true. 1/600th @5.6 is what the EXIF data reveals.
Hmmm ?? 2 1/2 stops difference ! hmm ? how come ??

Well a problem exists here. FILM 100 ISO and digital 100 ISO do not jive with each other for the same exact scene.

hasn't anyone else noticed this ?? So which value is WRONG ??

Some testing using a calibrated method with notes is important !!

results coming soon !!

fly - fly - through the air !

Blanket Toss (nalakutaq) (Nah-lah-koo-tuck) is a lot of fun.

It is all about 'form' !!

Blanket Toss was ORIGNALLY used @ the lead to toss a hunter into the air - for one purpose only - To see if animals are migrating !!

Letting the candy fly !! IN Barrow - the candy is for the children and the people surrounding the blanket.

In Point Hope the tradition is much different - the candy - or money 0r furs.. are for the elders ONLY .. if any child get his hands on any of the gifts. it is believed with all sincerity that next year will be a bad hunting year. So in essence - the elders do all that is physically possible to prevent any child from grabbing anything that is thrown.

Also - In Point Hope - anyone can get on the blanket to 'take a ride' but only those mothers that have had a first born child - are allowed to throw 'gifts' to the elders.

Some old guy tried to take some candy from my 3 year old child when we lived in Rolla, MO. I punched him square in the face and broke his nose. I wasn't arrested since the cop agreed that it was creepy a 68 year old was trying to take candy from a 3 year old. I should stay away from Point Hope blanket tosses!
