I just picked up a Ruger No. 1 in .30- 8mm Rem Mag. It has a Lilji fluted barrel, and one of the expensive Nikon scopes on it. I got for less than the going price on a used un-scoped No. 1 now so I couldn't pass on the deal.

Anyone have experience with this cartridge? I can use .300 Weatherby loading data to start, and use a combination of 8mm Rem Mag and .300 Weatherby Mag dies to load the rounds. I haven't found any loading dies yet, but what I have will work for now.

Value wise, it would be worth more to re-chamber it to the .300 Rem Ultra Mag or .30-378, or set it back a turn and re-chamber to .300 Weatherby. But for now I'm going to just see how it shoots, and it makes a good companion to the 7mm STW I got last year ecause it was also a deal :).

.30 STW. That is quite a round. I'd load for it and hunt with it.

Thanks -I'll see how it shoots before I do anything. It has a 28" barrel, which isn't too bad on a No. 1, so I should get some good velocities out of it. I'm not sure what it has over a .300 Weatherby though- I've got to shoot some rounds and compare case capacities.

Dies aren't easy to but I may be able to ream out the necks of 7mm STW dies. In the meantime I can make do with what I have to try it out.

It should smoke a .300 Weatherby. Just look at what the 7mm STW does in comparison to the 7mm Rem mag.

The 7mm STW is uses a full length H&H case while 7mm Rem Mag uses a shorter case. The .30 - 8mm Rem Mag and the .300 Weatherby use almost full length H&H cases. The shoulder in the .30 -8 is a bit more forward, but the Weatherby case is larger at the shoulder.

The 7mm Weatherby case is also significantly shorter than the 7mm STW, helping to justify the 7mm STW cartridge, while the .300 Weatherby is only slightly shorter but a bit fatter than the .30- 8mm. We'll see how it shoots.

Of course everyone now is going to the shorter fat magnums or the ultra mags, but I like how the longer cartridges feed, and I've got a big supply of the H&H cases in .300 H&H, 8mm Rem Mag,. .375 H&H etc. Bigger more powerful cartridges never make up for a lack of basic shooting and hunting skills.

The 7mm STW and the .30 STW both use the 8mm Remington Magnum case.
