Hey folks,
My older Dad(73) has purchased two used boats up here—a 16’ Hewes craft with a 50 and 16’ John boat with a 9.9 and stabilizers and they both have props. He got them to use around on the lakes depending on restrictions of course but, I want to use them elsewhere. What would y'all recommend? I'm a newbie as well when it comes to operating boats ( good on the maintenance part) and Im looking to learn.

What I did when I had my first saltwater boat was to go out with my friends who were former commercial fishermen.
They knew their way around a boat forward and backward.
They helped me learn a lot.
Stuff that had me white knuckling the helm with both hands, they ran one handed leaned back and relaxed.
So I guess my advice is to play around locally at first and go with more experienced boating friends and learn from them.

Thanks man. I'm more concerned as far as where to go not on the ocean with the boats that I have. Once I get a saltwater boat I will for sure take your advice.

Running waters such as the kenai or other rivers are quite different than running a flat calm lake.
IMHO Going with others who are experienced and know where to go also applies to freshwater boating.

When you learn what you're doing, you can take a 16' boat out on the ocean.....I used to do it all the time. You just have to pick your days, and be ready to head back in if the wind picks up.

Is that boat maintenance your good at?

The reason I’m asking is Hewes craft put foam in their hulls, over the years the foam get saturated with water adding hundreds of # to the boat. That need to be removed, and the Hull inspected for corrosion. I would also drain the fuel tank to remove any water.

Yep! Sure did my man. Took out all that foam and threw it away. Rhino lined the floors, ran new wiring, new seats, another shelf, phone charger, and drained the tanks and put in fresh fuel.
