WSM Primers

I've just started to work up loads for my 300wsm and am curious what primers folks are using. The first set of loads I worked up I used Fed 215's, but I'm not really convinced that you need a magnum primer for this round due to the short/fat powder column. I've read a few posts on other forums that suggest that by using a standard primer, like a Fed. 210, you'll actually get a more consistent powder burn. Thoughts?

I use CCI 250 Magnum primers and get good results with my powder and bullet combo.

My most recent loads are RL19 with 168 gr bullets and Federal 210 primers, as per the manual the load came from. Previous load was H4831 with Federal 215, as per manual.

I have gone through many different types of powders and primers working on loads for my 300wsm. What I found to work best, at least in my rifle, was Reloder 19 and WLRM primers. I got the best acccuracy and velocity and this combo was the most consistent of all combinations that I tried. It was also the cleanest burning of all the powders, but it still fouled.

One thing that I learned is Wipe-Out foam barrel cleaner will sure make life easier.

WSM Primers

This topic was hashed over on the shortmag forum for a long time. I tried both magnum and standard primers. Really can't point to any difference with accuracy and the chronograph readings. I decided to stay with the WLRM as some of my hunts are at and below zero. For that I wanted the extra "firepower" of a magnum primer. The Federal 215 is the hottest primer, designed to light the long powder column of the Weatherby cartridge line.
Someone once quoted an old reloading writer - that anything over 70 grains of powder needed a "magnum" powder - fwiw.

I also use RL 19 and have found it to be the best in my 300 wsm, The only primer I have ever used in it is the CCI 250.
Did you ever try these and if so were they any different then your WLRM's with your rifle and load?

I tried CCI, Rem, Win,and Fed primers in large rifle, LR mag and even bench rest. The most accurate and best consistancy in velocity - used a chrony - was with the WLRM. My loads are still below max and my fired caseheads measure .0003 smaller than fired factory ammo. My loads are safe in my rifle and they work well in colder temps.

I should also mention that if you are happy with your load, then stick with it. If you are pleased with the accuracy and velocity in your rifle, don't change anything. If you want to try the WLRM primers, start over with a starting load and work from there. I have found that better accuracy, consistancy, and velocity comes with a hotter load. I am still below the max load in the Alliant manual, but closer to it than the starting load. Hope this helps.

I really don't think I can improve on a 180 Interbond with 1/2"-3/4" groups with 3050 vel. I too have found the Hotter load to be more accurate atleast in my M70.
I was just asking to see what your results were between the two. I'm not going to fix anything that's not broke.
