Winter Predator Hunting

I'm wanting to try some winter predator hunting and would like input from everyone that's got some experience with it. I'd like to fill the wolf & fox limits without going the trapping route. Does anyone have any good advice?

Let me revise the post; I've been in a good area that I've already taken a black fox and seen tons of bear & wolf sign that's not too hard to reach. Anyone with some advice and experience would make a great hunting partner/instructor.

Wolf can be called in though rather difficult to do it. They are more of an oppurtunity species for a person trying to get them with a firearm. Failing the calling part the next best thing to do would to find a Moose carcass and set up around it. Get the trapping license. It doesn't mean you have to use traps or snares, just gives you more animals in which to shoot. The use of a hunting license has bag limits, trapping license has virtually no bag limit with the exception of a few Units and that is mostly just for Beaver.

Water_Gremlin and I are gearing up for an eventful predator season if all works out. Let me (or WG) know if you want someone to tag along. We both have a variety of predator calls and are wanting to get a couple of dogs this year.

If your willing to sit still and stay quite for up to an hour Id be more than willing take you on some hunts.

What time of year do you guys start getting serious??? I know that you have to wait for the coats to get prime. I may only have 9 months left up here and want to go learn how to call a pack of wolves in.

I usually wait until things freeze up around here because of the traveling I have to do to get out to where the wolves are. For Fox and Lynx I'll start as soon as trapping season opens on November 10th. Fox can be called in real close to town here. Lynx will be scattered in different locations but usually within 10-25 miles of Bethel. Usually around some of the other village landfills and acrossed the river from Bethel.

But I wouldn't pass up a canine. It might be a good time to practice calling.

I'll never forget the time I set up in an area that I new had lots of fox. It was a bright full moon and I just waited until I could actually see a couple foxes out on the frozen river. I blew on my call and they immediately bolted the wrong way.

That's when I new I needed more practice.

Actually now I know I should have just done a mouse squeak. I haven't had a lot of success calling. But I keep doing it anyhow.

I've never had any luck with calling. I can't recall ever seeing anything either while out calling. Is it just me or does it seem that the predator hunting is a lot easier down in the states than compared to up here? It just seems like the coyotes and foxes up here are just "smarter".

Thanks for the replies gents, Akmud & I are heading out Monday morning to "no-tellum" Hill for some fox/wolf/bear. I appreciate your responses and will let you know how we did. I'm hoping to learn some calling techniques and with my kind of luck, I'll see the biggest bull moose that ever existed now that they are closed. lol
