Winter Boating

I plan on using boat for hunting out of Whittier for the first time this winter. Anybody experienced in winter boating that can give me some ideas on what to expect and what things to be aware of?

Read the section in the cruising PWS book by Jim and Nancy Lethco on reccomended winter time anchorages. Dont forget that freezing in is a possbility during a cold snap if anchored in a spot that has a freshwater feed. Happened to me once I was, a little worried but the high tide came in and flushed all the ice. The book also has a great section on winter saftey prep that is even more critical given the obvious temp and weather conditions compounded by the fact there is less traffic to assist you if you have trouble.

I am interested in some water time also. I have an Explorer 2400. Have you been out? I was hoping to get some weather good enough to try for deer. Or just to burn some gas.
Do you have the manuals for your Sea Sport? I have been trying, but it looks like I have to drive to Seward to get them.

As far as I know SeaSport has never made a "Manual" for any of there boats. If you have any questions call the factory or call Boondocks in Washington state. They sell SeaSports and they are owned by SeaSport as well.
Only thing negative about owning an inboard is having to rewinterize it after using it in the winter.

One of my biggest concerns would be the unpredicatable weather. I'd carry a satellite phone if I were you, and enough fuel (diesel heat?) and food for a few days on the hook.

I did read that section. HEy I see the shark pic u have. Did u catch that? If so do mind sharing where you go for shark? I have really become interested in shark fishing the past year but I do not know where to go. I was reading NOAA study on salmon sharks and it suggeted an incrdible increas in shark #'s over the past severfal years. It said they counte 2000 sharks at the surface in Port Gravina atone time. Was hoping for a place a little closer though.
