I am heading out of Whittier tomorrow morning (Friday), and will send pics of the ramp, parking situation, etc.

Better check that weather really good. We are under a blizzard watch in Valdez with winds to 65 mph in the pass. So check your weather.

Went out last weekend (left thursday night, came back saturday), ramp below tide line was clear and dock was good. It was just flurrying down there saturday when we came back.... Nothing like what Anch town was experiencing. The parking was only in front of the harbor office, they lot hadn't even begun to be cleared as far as i could tell.

Hope this helps.

I've been watching the weather pretty close lately. The wortst part is the gusting 40-50 k at night thru passage and Whittier. Harbormaster said it's been brutal there lately. If it warms up some and the winds die down, I'll still be there Sunday night.

Propnut, how long are you guys going to be out?

I will be out Friday and returning Sunday. I'm taking some friends out fishing and skiing. We will be at the Squirrel Cove cabin at Decision Point. Feel free to stop by.

Now that I thought about it you probably meant skiing as in the snow kind :shot:

Yes, snow skiing. Maybe a bit early to break out the pull behind tube for the kids.

Ok, I don't see any photos of full shrimp pots! Thinking I made the right choice in heading out of town!

OK. Well no good pictures to show of shrimp. Although we did do well the second day after we moved to another location. But the Pakenham reef area sucked for shrimping. Shrimped there all day and pulled twice in different spots and only got about 2 dozen shrimp.
Hit a massive rock there and took out both props and skegs, one motor seized up. So, we motored back towards Whittier that afternoon but it was getting late so we decided to anchor up in Blackstone. Dropped pots there overnight and did pretty well. After pulling the pots, we slowly limped back to Whittier yesterday morning. Weather was beautiful 2 of the nicest days out there in a long time. Totally flat water once we left Passage. So, after a couple calls to the insurance company, I have an appointment with Deweys to have it fixed back up. Great weather but Bad trip.

See the elusive critter there?

Starboard lower. The port side was better but not much.

Wow!! That is enough to make a grown man cry!! But I'm sure you looked at the positve side that your hull did't take a hit.

And you made it back safely:eek:

Wow is right. I saw a similiar damage to one of the airforce boats last year at the ramp. They had been out deer hunting off Naked. When I ask the guy what happened he said that they had "Zoomed out on the GPS and all the astrisks had disappeared." According to him they were trucking along at about 25 knots and had the same result-one engine out completely, both skegs sheared off and both SS props bent up. I was very surprised that they made it all the way back in. Way lucky that they didn't tear out the bottom of the boat.

Yep. GPS zoomed out and worried about the icebergs in the area. Cry? Pretty darn close. Anyone that knows me will tell ya that I'm very proud of boat and I pretty much baby my stuff. But I use it as needed too. So, when I hit that rock I almost crapped my pants. I sat on the swimstep for quite a while thinking about what to do. Figured there wasn't much else I could do but make the most of the trip. Once we had her on the trailer, we didn't see any damage to the hull at all. Very lucky.

Oh that is a bummer, sure don't have to tell you that. I like your attitude, might as well make the most of the trip. Hope you get that boat back in action ASAP.

Well here's the good news: Anyone who hasn't had a close call is either lying, hasn't been on the water much or can walk on water. Unfortunately you were on the wrong side of a close call. As a friend of mine told me when I messed up a prop going up a river out of Dutch Harbor many years ago-"There are guys making these things all day long-someone has to keep them working!"
