Sure, a commercial guy can drop ten times the pots, but aren't there more than ten times the rec guys over the commercial guys? Bottom line is, your raping and pillaging comment against the commercial guys isn't cool. Who is doing the real raping and pillaging out there?

This thread was not about comm vs sport and I am now regret making the comment and hurting feelings.
I forget how soft the country is becoming.
Either way the question I asked has not been answered as to where they are fishing. I don't want to fish around them and would prefer to go somewhere else. When the comm guys are fishing they all fish the same area and it makes it harder to find a spot so I try to stay out of their way.

Probably won't make opening day. Replacing the electronics with a Garmin 742, radar, chartplotter, depth, engine monitoring system.

My 8 year old daughter thinks Rob is pulling a fast one but I have faith that someday that $2 dollars will show up in the mail.

Good luck to all you a shrimp slayers!

I will be making the opener for just that day. Taking the wife and kid out for there first trip and breaking in the new motor(weather permitting). I will be back out on the 19-21 to try and find some shrimp. I got some more pots from Steve at the sportsman show so im excited to try and find some shrimp. 40lbs is alot of shrimp, last year i only managed to get 3 shrimp total. so if this year is anything like last you dont have to worry about me taking to much :). Good luck to everyone out there

I plan to go shrimping on the 19th. I dont expect to go fill my pots, but I sure hope to. I think it's great that the shrimp are healthy enough to support a small commercial fishery, and still allow hundreds or thousands of Alaksans like me to spend one or two weekends over there and stuff my face and my freezer full of some of the best food on earth. I can't think of anything more fun than taking a week or two off work some day and participating in the commercial season. As long as the biomass can support it, I'm all about it. I did notice that our catch was lighter than before the comm guys came through. Our pots went from absurdly packed to just kind of packed. I can live with that.

One more example of a healthy, diverse Alaskan fishery that benefits many different users.

The commercial boundary this year is limited to area 1. An area that covers from just West of Esther passage, down to Perry, over to lone, over to the eastern edge, and back around to valdez. It covers the area that the most recent study reflects as being the best bay in the sound for shrimp. Here's the link to the announcement.. http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/home/news/pdfs/newsreleases/cf/247121737.pdf

I mounted up a puller yesterday, got it wired, and all but the switch set in place....woke up this morning to this gawldurned whitestuff all over the ground and boat. I just untarpted it 2 days ago.....so I guess I owe everyone $2.00......LOL.

Headed to Homer this weekend if the weather blows through. Have a cabin in Tutka and want to fish for kings, butt, and rockies for a day or three.

Planning on going out for shrimp the 19th - depends on weather though. Could maybe go earlier if the weather gets nice.....

FYI, the first three commercial shrimp openers are all Mon-Thursday, so there won't be any commercial pots out on the weekend for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the info Brian. I didn't catch that. Doesn't help me much though. I'm always working while you guys are out playing. Guess I get to play with the Comm guys. Maybe I can drop a line across Steve's pots.

I get the majority of my shrimp within about 20 miles of Whittier, no reason to go farther.

I'm glad that see that someone else has the same luck I have.

I'll just finish my nice cold beer and wait for the snow to go!

Just so everyone knows I kept my word!

This might be some good news for you guys who like to shrimp unakwik, this is from F&G emailed to me,

The first period of the PWS commercial shrimp pot fishing season will open at 8:00 a.m. Monday, April 15, and will close at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
The harvest in statistical area 476036(unakwik) was 60% (33,050 lb) of the overall GHL (55,000 lb) in 2010, the last time the fishery was prosecuted in this area. Because of the regulation that came into effect last season limiting harvest to 25% of the GHL in one statistical area, statistical area 476036 will close following the first fishing period and will remain closed through the second and third periods, to manage the fishery within regulation limits.
