I'm one of the winners!

I'm one of the winners!

No, I didn't win any money or merchandise, but I returned home richer for the trip. Well, not monetarily richer. That would be poorer.

We had an odyssey on our trip. A quick rundown.

We got as far as Summit Lake and the lights started flashing on the dash board. I had never seen this happen this way so I called the mechanic at work. He said it is my transmission. Being an optimist (most of the time) I thought he might be mistaken and convinced myself that it is all downhill from Summit. I had to reconsider when the truck wouldn't even pull the very slight grade out of the lodge parking lot.
I checked the tranny fluid and it wasn't showing on the stick. Marty (owner of Summit Lake lodge) found a quart of fluid I could have. He refused any money, kudos to him for helping. It took 1/3 of the quart to put it over the top of the stick. OK, we aren't going to make it.
With Marty's permission we left the boat there and started back to Anchorage. The mechanic met us at Girdwood with another truck. He called later and said it barely made it back to town.
3 hours lost, but we were happily heading south again. It was getting late by the time we registered, got the boat wet and ate. The hotel had given our room away since we didn't call them. Hey, a noisy room next to the bar is better than sleeping on the boat, right?
We convinced ourselves that this is all a test to see how bad we wanted to fish. Up early and on the boat around 7. The second downrigger I mounted was frozen up. The toggle switch would not move. (Kept inside all winter????WTH) Good thing I had thrown in a manual for backup.
All the trouble melted away as the boat purred to life. The sun was shining and life was good. What a glorious day on the water. I never saw a salmon being caught. I did hook a pretty Irish lord.
(Hey, the first fish of the year is always pretty)

Kudos out to HomerDave. Always there to let a guy know whats happening. Glad he got into a few. Always more fun when you see guys you know on the water.

When we got in the ramp was way busy. I dropped my bud off and met him at the barge ramp. No one using it. Out of the water real fast. When we were winterizing the boat I had my head down in the cockpit while Mike got out the anti-freeze. I pull a hose and fill a funnel. Having the jugs open and ready we start the boat. The trick is to keep the fluid pouring before the engine sucks the funnel dry. So when I grabbed the second jug I noticed it was a different shade. No time to look, just pour. When I peeked over the transom to see if pink was running out all I saw was foam. The second jug he had set out was citrus cleaner! Flushed that out in Soldotna and expect to have a clean cooling system next spring.

There were a couple of boats that kept calling in fish caught. The Memory Maker and My Girlfriend seemed to be in the know. If the MM is a charter, I am booking a trip with him. I'm the first to admit that I am a novice at this.

Tired as heil this AM. But after such a glorious day on the flat water, I can't wait until next years derby. I'll get one then!

It was an absolutely beautiful day for the derby. Yes, "My Girlfriend" found the spot, landing five Kings in the afternoon following a slow morning. Its a buddy's boat. We had practice fished together a couple times in the past few weeks, but the "spot" ended up being somehwere other than we had tried in the past. Seemed every time he trolled through it he picked up a fish. He was completely stoked. Not only did he catch five, but one topped twenty.

We couldn't stand by and just hear about it though, so met up and picked up two kings on the Vienna Marie in the last hour, all almost right on the spot.

Skookum did not win in the skunk bet category, which means...WE GOT SKUNKED! Caught kings all week long on the way up to the tournament, then nothing in 7 hours of fishing. Go figure.

But I agree with other sentiments here. It was a gorgeous day for a tournament. Everybody I passed waved with all their fingers, and my buddies and I had a great time at the cabin on Friday, then out on the water Sat.

Today we went back out and in 2 hours of fishing picked up a small one off Anisom Point. Does NOT getting skunked the weekend of the tournament count?

I Don't Think A Sunday Fish Counts

I Don't Think A Sunday Fish Counts

Sorry Jim,
That'd be like, do all the "practice fish" leading up to the derby count. It's only a one day deal, therefore being in the right place at the right time on Saturday winner takes all.Of course,we all know that already. So congradulations to all the winners, and for the rest of us (yeah I got skunked too) there's always next year.
Hopefully next time down I'll make up for this weekend. And it won't cost me as much...

Made the top 20

Caught 3 and lost 1 on the Patsy K. The wife landed a 19.1 pound fish. 17th and 18th place was a tie ( both at 19.1 LBS )

Memory Maker came in a 3 way tie for 12th with a 20.2 and 15th with a 20,0 and also a 12lber. They hooked 3 and landed all 3. They also won 2 sidebets so we will see them next year

Dave, Jim, and I put three fish on deck, and at one point had 5% of all fish caught (3 of the first 60). We didn't catch any after about 11:30, though, so that percentage slipped. Still, not a bad day on the water when only 135 fish were caught out of 860 anglers. Not bad at all, and fresh king for dinner to top it. We'll see if I recoup my cost of the derby entrance fee with my skunk bet paying off. :)
