No, I didn't win any money or merchandise, but I returned home richer for the trip. Well, not monetarily richer. That would be poorer.
We had an odyssey on our trip. A quick rundown.
We got as far as Summit Lake and the lights started flashing on the dash board. I had never seen this happen this way so I called the mechanic at work. He said it is my transmission. Being an optimist (most of the time) I thought he might be mistaken and convinced myself that it is all downhill from Summit. I had to reconsider when the truck wouldn't even pull the very slight grade out of the lodge parking lot.
I checked the tranny fluid and it wasn't showing on the stick. Marty (owner of Summit Lake lodge) found a quart of fluid I could have. He refused any money, kudos to him for helping. It took 1/3 of the quart to put it over the top of the stick. OK, we aren't going to make it.
With Marty's permission we left the boat there and started back to Anchorage. The mechanic met us at Girdwood with another truck. He called later and said it barely made it back to town.
3 hours lost, but we were happily heading south again. It was getting late by the time we registered, got the boat wet and ate. The hotel had given our room away since we didn't call them. Hey, a noisy room next to the bar is better than sleeping on the boat, right?
We convinced ourselves that this is all a test to see how bad we wanted to fish. Up early and on the boat around 7. The second downrigger I mounted was frozen up. The toggle switch would not move. (Kept inside all winter????WTH) Good thing I had thrown in a manual for backup.
All the trouble melted away as the boat purred to life. The sun was shining and life was good. What a glorious day on the water. I never saw a salmon being caught. I did hook a pretty Irish lord.
(Hey, the first fish of the year is always pretty)

Kudos out to HomerDave. Always there to let a guy know whats happening. Glad he got into a few. Always more fun when you see guys you know on the water.
When we got in the ramp was way busy. I dropped my bud off and met him at the barge ramp. No one using it. Out of the water real fast. When we were winterizing the boat I had my head down in the cockpit while Mike got out the anti-freeze. I pull a hose and fill a funnel. Having the jugs open and ready we start the boat. The trick is to keep the fluid pouring before the engine sucks the funnel dry. So when I grabbed the second jug I noticed it was a different shade. No time to look, just pour. When I peeked over the transom to see if pink was running out all I saw was foam. The second jug he had set out was citrus cleaner! Flushed that out in Soldotna and expect to have a clean cooling system next spring.
There were a couple of boats that kept calling in fish caught. The Memory Maker and My Girlfriend seemed to be in the know. If the MM is a charter, I am booking a trip with him. I'm the first to admit that I am a novice at this.
Tired as heil this AM. But after such a glorious day on the flat water, I can't wait until next years derby. I'll get one then!
