I'm not sure when they start, but it's not until May I believe.

Jim,

I talked to the Chugach Forest Service folks last spring about their plans for supplying the cabins with propane. They said they planned to deliver propane in the spring around May 15 and then have their last delivery in the fall around September 15.

the USFS blocks out a couple of days at each cabin with X's on the dates./QUOTE]

That is a good idea to look for the X out dates for when they are at the cabins.

Yes, a beautiful weekend in PWS, with not too many boats. The parking lot is about as good as ever, and the shrimping was pretty good. Ended up with 620 of them for 24 hours of 'work'.

The sunny skies were a very small portion of the true weather...gusty, overcast, wet and cold. Smooth in the morning, rough in the afternoon...thought I was in Seward in late September.

When was the sun out? I never did see it.

Got the boat ready and the shrimp pots I'll be headed out this weekend and can't wait. Has anyone been catching anything? Pollock? And where near? I got my boat late last year, so never been out this early in the year.

Eagle River, Alaska,
Just got back from 3 days in Whittier. Friday was amazing. Dropped the pots and cruised around seeing some glaciers. Holed up in a cove with some friends and woke up to rain that really didn't stop until this afternoon. Overall, we caught 1 yelloweye and a quilback. We caught between 8 and 900 shrimp and 1 tanner crab that went back to the bottom. Shrimping was ok and I was hoping for better but we can't complain.
Spotted Swissy once cuising thru the bay and saw the Memory Maker at the gas pumps in Whittier. Nice boat. We only saw a few others out there. Not as crowded as I thought it would be. Here are some pictures.

Hey DMan (as well as all other GC owners). On the Timeline, we found that both of the Yamahas (250s) were mounted too high on the swimstep. They should have been lowered one hole and will have to be fixed. If your getting alot of spray shooting up while on step, you may want to look into it. Also, the steering (hydraulic) piston that GC used is rated for 300 horses only so if you have two 250, thats 500 horses. Thats something else you may want to look into... Just an FYI as it would suck if the steering went out when you are way out there in PWS... "fishon"

Interesting on the Ram. I will check into it.

On the motors the they are usually mounted to low which is what causes the spray, the cavitation plate is buried in the water. My boat has an extended bottom to the back of the ET so my motors are mounted perfect. A few people have raised their motors to stop the spray but then in hard turns or ruff seas you might cavitate. Mine having the extended bottom I don't get any spray and I have turned it hard at 40+ MPH and haven't heard any cavitation. Very happy with the way they are mounted so far. I will definitely check into the ram issue.

What part of the sound will you be in? I think I will be heading out too, either with the family or guys depending on weather (fair weather family). I will be out in the direction of Valdez.

He is already on the water, Jim.

And that I was, we headed toward the eastern side as well. I only saw a couple other boats. I'll PM you my cell so you have it next time.

Yep. That was me. We barely made the tunnel. Nice looking pictures. Too bad the weather didn't stay that nice out.

I don't think it was an issue of when the sun was out, but where. It seemed like the middle part of the sound was pretty sunny. It always seemed grayer and rainier over towards Whittier.

Exactly, it was sunny on the way back in until I got sight of Blackstone and Passage, then it was just dark! By the time we hit Whittier most of it had blown over and it was actually sunny.
