Whittier tomorrow

My son and I, and maybe my dad and brother, will be heading to Whittier tomorrow to drop some shrimp pots and try catching a fish or two. Will be in a black Hewes Ocean Pro. See you out there. Anyone catch a fish out of Whittier yet? If the weather allows, I found a couple spots on the chart I want to try out.

I'll be down for the day as well. Was out opening day +3 at the Paulson Bay cabin. Sure wish it didn't rain so **** much that trip! Hope tomorrow is better - so far looks good

Might be too late for you to get this report but really no value added...We dropped bait/jigged crippled herring SE Lone Island 2 hours leading to slack tide and 3 of us didn't produce a single bite! Also jigged smaller stuff [proven on rockfish] at several locations throughout the PWS [up shallower in rocks and edges of deeper dropoffs] for approx 4 more hours ~ not a single bite. Water temp was 39 degrees.

Hey DMan (as well as all other GC owners). On the Timeline, we found that both of the Yamahas (250s) were mounted too high on the swimstep. They should have been lowered one hole and will have to be fixed. If your getting alot of spray shooting up while on step, you may want to look into it. Also, the steering (hydraulic) piston that GC used is rated for 300 horses only so if you have two 250, thats 500 horses. Thats something else you may want to look into... Just an FYI as it would suck if the steering went out when you are way out there in PWS... "fishon"

The Paulson Bay cabin has propane heater in it now and no wood stove? Was there any propane at the cabin?

My son said one of his friends was out in the sound last weekend and one of the cabins they rented had so much snow on the roof the weight had suffienctly tweaked the door frame that they couldn't open the door :|

Should be a great spring for ski and shrimp trips!

Hey Doug,
Paulson does have propane heater, as does Goose Bay and I believe most of the USFS cabins are going that route if not already. When we got there, one of the 100# cylinders was still full of propane. But we take a 20# bottle with us, just in case. I even got one of the lighter weight composite ones for the lighter weight of boating with. They are actually pretty economical heaters, but every time I have gotten to the cabin, all the valves are in the open position so if any leak, there will be nothing left.

Back from Whittier. The weather was freaking awesome. Windy in the morning, but glass calm for most of the day. Too bad the fishing was not as good as the weather. I didn't have high expectations on rod and reel fishing, but I thought the shrimping would have been a little better. We ended up with 1-2 gallons of shrimp. As far as rod and reel, we fished the N.E. side of Knight island and ended up with 1 quillback rockfish and a handful of pollack. The highlight of the trip was the dolphins swimming with the boat, my son and brother had never seen it before and they got right up in the bow and watched them swim with us, they thought it was the coolest thing.

Isn't that just the most amazing thing? I had that happen coming back from Pony Cove one day and the friend of mine from the lower-48 I had along with me went into an "amazement coma" for about half an hour.

Thanks for the propane update on the Paulson Bay cabin. One of the problems I see with the propane heaters and the Chugach Forest Service providing the #100 cylinders is as you stated above, you never know if there will be propane at the cabin by the time your trip rolls around due to system leaks, running the heater 24 hours a day by the previous occupant, etc. Our group is planning on bringing some 5 gallon tanks as well.

No problem Doug,
one thing you can do to get an idea, is look over the reservation site online... the USFS blocks out a couple of days at each cabin with X's on the dates. Those are when they go in and empty the poopers, refill the propane supply, and so on. I'm not sure when they start, but it's not until May I believe. So a good idea to take your own. I have the Goose Bay cabin this coming week and we'll have extra propane just in case!

Also, depending on when you go... snowshoes might be helpful!! Someone had carved steps in the snow up to the Paulson Cabin, but they were rotting out by the middle of our trip and I stomped a new path with snowshoes. Not sure how long the snow will hold any weight, but it'll be before the ground path exposes itself! There was a solid 6' in areas...

So true!! We were out yesterday as well (awesome day!) and caught a pod of Orca's in Passage just before you enter the north end of Culross. What an AMAZING 45 minutes!! Even saw them go right under the boat - you could see them a few feet down, and even hear the rush of the water as they did so. We just had the motor off and enjoyed the show till they left. Mother Nature at her finest...

Never seen so many dall porpoise in my life. They were everywhere and acted like they hadn't seen anyone all winter. Hung around "visiting" much longer than the normal quick bow ride and back to feeding.
