From past experience of living on a farm and having to grate our long driveway every year, I learned the only way to get rid of a pothole is to literally get rid of the pothole. Filling it in only adds to the amount of gravel around the old hole. If ya dig down and REALLY grate that lot good early in the year, it would lost much longer. But that means they would have to put some time and energy into that huge cash cow they operate.

God forbid they put ANYTHING back into that business!!

Maybe instead of chasing everybody that comes into the lot to collect money they could fill the back of the little white truck with some gravel and go fill in some of the bigger craters??

I dont think that is their plan. I think what they are going to do is let the potholes get a bit bigger and then they are going to stock some fish in them and provide another fishing opportunity for those with out a boat. :)

Is this thread the "annual complain about the Whittier parking lot" thread.... if so I am in.

I think its a huge stretch to call that a gravel parking lot as well. More like a rocky field that people park in. In the one summer I have been going to Whittier I have seen rocks bigger than my head. It is easy to find on big enough to use for a wheel chock.

I wonder how much the lease on the land is and how much they pocket at the end of the year?

Maybe we should form a co-op(aka Deska Landing) and go to the railroad when the lease comes up for bid again??? Say 100 boat owners kick in a grand apiece for seed money and see what happens. I'd be willing to camp out there and run the place for the summer. Ben the lot manager told me that the town made him sign a agreement not to sell any boat or fishing gear at the lot, guess it might cut in on the extensive inventory & business of the harbor store!! What a joke!!! whittidiot thinking at its best.
I'd bet there are a few guys on here that could run a grader or whatever it would take to get & keep the lot in shape.
First promise I'll make you as mayor of the lot is i'll get a bunch of bikes from the police auctions so at least you could ride a bike forth and back from the ramp. The 4 wheeler, ranger or golf cart shuttle will come later!!

I could see a shrimp pot stand sitting right next to the main office for us to pick up lost supplies. ;) Count me in.

images.jpg A atv or utv towing one of them silly tram cars (the open ones) would work great, just make a big continious loop between the harbor and parking lot.

I am in. The bike idea is great. I know for a while there were some bikes stashed by one of the exits.

Ive been going down their just about every weekend from may 1 until its froze back up.. this past year I went in Dec.. I think about everything in that town is run @ss backwards.. Its frustrating for sure.. But its the only place to get their.. you have to use the tunnel.. they can charge what every they wish and were forced to pay it.. or not use it.. then the boat launch.. same deal.... the parking lot as others have mentioned is hideous at best.. Same boats that sit their for months that I bet aren't paying.. must be friends of a friend of a friend who owns or works the lot.. Cant leave anything unsecure, ot the whitt0isiots will steal what ever is not chained down.. (no one saw a thing).. All the money by the thousands a day dumped into that place by paying customers.. and nothing has changed in the 11 years I been their.. In a couple weeks Ill be down their again.. *****ing in my head the whole time.. Maybe they should take a vacation to valdez and see how operations are ran their.. So Smooth..

I've never had any problems with theft(so far) so i'll give that to the place but the rest of the story is dead on the money.

Steve,

I've never had anything taken so far either..(knock on wood).. then again I never leave nothing down their for anyone to steal but my truck and trailer..(scared everytime I walk away).. I check my door locks 2 3 times and most of the time turn aorund to make sure they are locked again.. I even have my spare tire locked and chained to my trailer.. I guess last year their was some theft of gas from peoples tanks that left them unattended. With gas pushing 4.00 this year.. My bet is those perps will pop up again this summer..

So...the parking lot is crap, there is no security either and it's expensive to launch in Whittier. I guess I'll just pass on going there and spend my time and money in Seward. Other than being closer to Anchorage, why would someone go to Whittier if you have to deal with all that junk? I want to be thinking of fishing and dreaming up fish stories rather than worring about my gas and other posessions being stolen.

It's more about boating than fishing in Whittier.

Been thinking about parking the boat there this summer. Looks like I'm gonna need to get a few tank locks. Anyone have any problem with leaving their shrimp pots in their boat or do you lock em in the boat cabin?

If you're loooking at a day trip for fishing, Seward wins hands down. As far as leaving Anchorage and heading out from the dock both locations are a wash in terms of $ and time. Where Seward wins is getting into better fishing closer to port.

Now, if you are heading out for 2 or 3 days, want to catch some shrimp, want to explore the shore and you want a nice protected bay to anchor up, no comparison, PWS via Whittier is the clear winner.

Never had any problems with pots left on the back of my boat, i've slept in my boat lots of nights when it was parked in the lot and never even saw anyone wandering through at night, i was woken up a lot of times due to railroad noise.

I look around that lot all the time when I park there and see tons of stuff that would be easy to steal. Shrimp pots sitting on bows of boats, net, heck some guys leave there rods in the rod holders. I figure if I lock my cabin door and leave all the good stuff out of sight that they will move on to easier targets. The one time I left my boat in the lot for 10 days or so I took my pots with me. I was too worried about them taking a walk.
