I was just in Sportsman's this weekend looking to pick up powder, etc and they didn't seem to have any - plenty of bullets and other items, but no powder. Any ideas on where to source in town? Thanks!

Frontier Outfitters also sells Pyrodex. Seems like both BP (substitute)and caps have been in short supply lately. No source for real BP here that I know of but there is a website for a Nor'west company: https://www.norwestcompany.com/ I don't know what their status is looks like the website hasn't been updated for a while. If you do try to contact them please let me know what you find out.

Our local Peninsula stores have had plenty of the BP substitutes lately. Sportsman's and 3 bears.
But caps are still as rare as hens teeth.
I still have some caps and a few pounds of the real BP so I'm still good for awhile.
But I am going to start making my own BP and caps here real soon.
A friend is getting into it but can't get caps so we're working together on making some using my cap maker and some homemade H48 primer mix.

That's good to hear! Sounds like there is hope on the horizon. I grabbed a couple tins from Great Northern Guns a month or so ago, Remington, which I've never used but just thought I better get what I can.

Sportsmans in Fairbanks had Blackhorn 209 last time I was in there. If your looking for actual black powder then I think your probably out of luck at the moment.

Since we're talking about homemade powder here, does anyone know if there's any source of flint or any sort of chert suitable for knapping flints to be found out and about in the wild in Alaska? Boy, have to say that BrownBear's departure sure left a big hole. I just picked up a Brown Bess Carbine (Pedersoli) and would love to still be able to discuss it and all things black powder with that guy.

In 1995 the AKDGGS published a study documenting the distribution of all flavors of chert in the Brooks Range...

I found it: https://dggs.alaska.gov/webpubs/dggs/pdf/text/pdf1995_032.pdf Very cool. Thanks! Doesn't look like I'm going to drive anywhere and dig up flint today, at least it would appear that the chert is a ways from the road system. Maybe a fly-in chert prospecting trip deviates a bit from the primitive muzzleloader thing, but would be fun.

If it were me I'd chat up the geologists at DGGS and inquire if anyone knows of a potential source somewhat less remote.

True. Would probably need to consult with a geologist anyway since I probably wouldn't really know what I was looking at. From the map it appears there could be some near Anaktuvuik Pass. Could be some possibilities there.
