Where's a good place to ride Thanksgiving? Will Petersville have enough snow to ride or is Eureka better? I know its hard to predict the weather, but I'd like to take the family out snowmaching that weekend.
On the radio yesterday AKM&D said there was 2ft of snow in Paxton and 10 inches or so around Eureka. I also called Gate Creek Cabins in Petersville and they said they almost always have good snow by Thanksgiving. Also, a friend of mine was hiking around Hatcher's Pass last PM and it was snowing like crazy there. Bring it on!!
We went to Summit Lake on the Rich. two weekends ago and it was great. A few rock patches to look out for, but excellent powder in spots. Lets just say there was enough to rip some tight turns in the powder. Not bad getting up there either, there was enough at the road. Thats always an great option.(depending on the temperature, could be -20)
I was up around Paxon last weekend hunting Caribou and didn't think the snow cover was all that good. I had friends that went up last weekend off the Richardson Monument mile 199? into the Hoodoos and behind the tit and said the snow was awesome. Thats at about 5-6 thounsand feet. Paxon lodge and Meir lakes are about it for that area. Of course if I had my choice and a family I would go to Mcclaren lodge. $7 dollars to park your rig at Paxon and 40 miles in (all hwy). I think you can get a room for around $60. McClaren lodge has a website. Right now there is no snow forcated for that area for at least 10 days.
Good luck .
I got a first hand report that the Denali Hwy leading into Macclaren is bare in many spots for the first 20 miles, with very little snow on the side of the highway.
Weather was for high winds with wind chills around -50 this weekend.
Forget just about anywhere for Thanksgiving. In reality, the only decent ride I have had around Thanksgiving was Summit Lake past Paxson. Otherwise I just tore the crap out of my sled.
I know it just hasn't snowed enough in SC or the Interior; I'd like to do the Maclaren trip sometime. Were ready to go as soon as the snow flies. I hope by x-mass we have decent snowfall.
