Where are all the rabbits?

I have done some rabbit hunting during the winter, but all the area where I usually go can't be accessed till the sloughs freeze up. I live in Eagle River, but I am willing to go for a drive if it means I have some ok odds at seeing something. If anyone could give me an idea of where to go where I could find either hare or ptarmigan, it would be greatly appreciated.

I was just south of Delta in July. There were hundreds if not thousands of rabbits along the road, both alive and squashed. I have never seen so many. There must be even more that aren't along the roadway.
