Hello all,
I am planning a Kodiak deer hunt this year and I am trying to figure out what kind of rates one can expect to pay for an air taxi service. I'm not even sure if "Air Taxi" is the right term but I am looking to fly in to Kodiak from Anchorage and then from there fly out somewhere off the road system management area so it doesn't have to be very far. As of now this would be a solo trip but I may try and get another hunter involved. Any advice on rates and recommended service providers?

$500-$1500 should get a round trip to hunting spots on Kodiak Island. That's per person. $400 would get you to places nearer to town, while $1200 would get you to the other end of the island. Usually, farther away from town gets you into areas with more deer. Also gets you away from most boat hunters.

How much does it usually cost though? Are we talking somewhere in the couple of hundred dollars range or are we talking $2,000+?
Totally depends on how far you're going and what airplane you're chartering. But a couple hundred dollars isn't going to get you anywhere. Flight time is very expensive before a single dollar of profit is made by the company.

Ok,,,,, I usually don't offer any sugesstions with regards to where a guy might want to go Hunting, but,,,, you should really think about getting a partner for a trip of this nature,,,,, ie... Hunting Kodiak, esspecially a solo Hunt on Kodiak is not for the faint of Heart, I don't know your skill level, so if I'm off base, I appoligize,,,,
but I've Hunted Kodiak more than once, as my 1st trip out there was in 1963, Deadmans Bay, my Dad and my Uncle were Hunting with Hal Waugh,,,,,, and remember,,,,, once you are out there, that doesn't mean you going to get back when you think you are,,,,, ie... Mothe Nature can S~hit on your pararde in a heart-beat,,,,, so, do your homework, and be prepared,,,,, and if you score,,,,, remember Mr. Bruin ( the brown one) will be trying to score as well, thats when a partner really comes in handy,,,,, ie.... one-guy on gaurd-duty, one guy getting some sleep, and then vise-versa,,,,, Ok, enough said, I hope you get the picture, and Good Luck....... :ninja:

Pilots are in short supply. It’s easier for a new pilot to go fly in the lower 48 than AK. Pilots are being paid more to fly everything today. If you find a pilot to fly you anywhere CHEAP then beware. Unless of course you want your adventure to turn into a movie.

Did you buy a cheap rifle or tent or bag? I’m NOT an expert on bush pilot cost but have been flying for 43 years both military and commercial.

Pay what they want and have FUN!

I’m a commercial pilot in Alaska and am reporting facts. Insurance rates have skyrocketed. Aviation fuel is up as well. Our success depends on safety and customers to keep the lights on and nobody want to price themselves out of work. Many younger pilots willing to put up with the long intense flying season and the challenges of Alaska flying are now being hired by companies outside. So, pilot pay has to go up to keep folks.
Unfortunately your prices are going up because it is what it is.

Hi all, I too am looking to fly out this coming fall for a deer hunt. I contacted Sea Hawk and they told me that they are only taking customers that had flown with them in the past, ie. repeat customers. As a new customer I'm out of luck. As others have said Andrews Air is out of business. I also tried to contact Vertigo Air with no results. Negative response to calls and email. Not too may choices. Boat hunts are super expensive. Good luck.

Cost will depend on several factors. How much gear/people to haul (do you need a DHC-2 Beaver or a Cessna 206), . popular dates are booked well in advance and cost more). Where are you going? A Old Harbor with regularly scheduled air service, a charter for a quick 30 min jump to Uganik Bay, or a 1+ hr flight to the south end of the island. Kodiak conditions are challenging. You want an experienced pilot to be able to get you in/out where and when you want to go. Check out https://kodiakairservice.com/. Willy is one of the best in the business with 20 plus years safely flying passengers around Kodiak Island and the Alaska Peninsula. You could also try Island Air: https://www.flyadq.com/aircraft-charter/. Most air services can help plan your trip. Plan on weather days and lots of wind/rain. Kodiak is an amazing place, get out and enjoy it!

I did multiple trips last fall, saying that it depends on weight but in general you’re looking at 2,200 to 2,500 per person to the south end. And possibly a fuel charge on top of that.

Have you tried Kingfisher Aviation? It's been probably 12 years, but I flew with them in the past and they were great to work with. Their Bushhawk airplanes are super cool from a pilot perspective.
