My buddy and I have a nice drift boat and want to float the Kenai for Reds. Most likely put in at Coopers Landing and float to the Russian. My question is this. What do I look for when it comes to spots to stop and fish for Reds? Slow water? Fast water? Points? My fly rod is all set and ready! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have and great day and Thanks!

My advice would be to start at the sportsmans landing (russian ferry) and take out at Jims Landing. Most of the first run fish run up the Russian, so starting at the Cooper Landing bridge and ending at the russian would not be very productive.

I second that, ferry launch to Jim’s is the best right now, not many fish above there. The picture shows the launch down stream to the island. The second pic is the island, at the head of the island is called “Kill Box” by all the guides. Start your drift at 3-4 am and get there first. Reds stack up in there, deep channel right right along the edge. Best spot in river, guides wait in line to get in there during daytime hours.

The bank all along the edge I drew on has good holding places too

Good luck. Be ready for the pullout when you see the highway, maybe even GPS mark it at Jim’s Landing the first time. If you pass it you are hosed, but lots of room to pull out, just hard to see from above. We do it in float pontoons all the time, great time.

In a van down by the river
gravel bars, especially the inside gravel bars on any bend. Other wise look for your typical runs and places where structures create calm spots in the water flow, by that time there should be plenty of fish throughout the river, however you wont be alone.
