GO-like SL5

GO-like SL5

My next must-have is a Go-Lite SL3 or SL5 shelter. I need something light enough that I'll always carry it on my back. I was going to go with a bivy, but the rave reviews on here have me convinced. Besides, it would be nice to have something large enough for my wife and I to share so I don't have to make her sleep alone outside. :topjob:

Brian they are great!! I got one this summer and already have 23 days in it. They have an amazing amount of room for the weight. If you packraft the paddle makes a great pole.

If it were only one item, for me it will be boots. I've got a pair of Lowa's but they are close to falling apart. Too many sheep miles I guess. So I might look at getting them re-soled or a pair of plastic boots that has me interested. If I go with plastic boots, I'll be looking at the "glacier socks" at Barney's as well.

For a second item...I was really impressed with a sheep video that was posted this year. Not sure if I can scrape up enough dough, but I'd like to get a set up like that. Swarovski HD spotter with a video camera that attaches right to the scope. Probably won't happen unless I win big somewhere....like Vegas?

Great to know, Russ! We do packraft a bit, and it's nice to know that we can leave the trekking pole at home if we go this route.

Hodgeman- check out the "soto" stoves. Same style as the jetboil but folks here rave their cold weather abilities.

I'd l

I don't see the stove you're talking about? Like a jetboil.

LL bean wool guide jacket and wool pants to replace my columbia wool. only because my columbia now fits too tight in combo with my fleece jacket and bibs. I hate that feeling....."fat guy in a little shirt".

I'll probably get a tipi of some sort. Maybe a ptarmigan bivi bag and I think it's getting close to replacing my plastic boots.

For you guys looking for a canister water boiling stove the MSR Reactor is awesome. I've had mine for two years now.

I saw a reactor stove in action in the Brooks this year. Very nice stove and probably the best in windy conditions. I use my stove predominantly inside my tent so wind resistance isn't much of an issue.

Brian, you'll love the GL SL-5, we just got one this year for backpacking with the kids. It is a palace!

I'm getting a McHale pack

I am looking to buy a new tent as well. Was thinking a 4 season 3-4 person. How do these tipi styles hold up in the wind and rain? Also how is the condensation to deal with? I like the looks of how much room they offer and the standing ability.

Just bought my one new big toy this week, a pro pioneer!! Pretty excited to use it. Now I just gotta find a good tent.

I'll be picking up a couple of Ti goat bivs this year, as well as a sil tarp to use with a hiking pole.
The thought of a spare emergency set up which weighs mere ounces in the day pack offers some real peace of mind and a go-anywhere mentality.

I added a large light weight tarp to my kit last year and really like it. Less than a pound and tons of room, even makes a nice tent. Great for cooking and storing gear and light enough for backpack hunts.

These tipi style tents will have condensation on the walls but getting wet in my tent has not been a problem at all. My wife is really picky about condensation and she loves the tent. With the extra room you aren't hitting the walls all the time. I have had no problem with it in wind and rain. If you get it well staked it does fine in the wind. You have to seam seal the tent though (at least on the Go lite) to make it completely waterproof. 039.jpg

Four Dog titanium stove to mate with my Kifaru 8-man tipi. I like my medium t-d Kifaru stove, but it is not airtight enough for me. Too many sparks jumping out of gaps and cracks. Sooner or later it's gonna pop a hole in my Downmat or burn my eyelid.

good luck getting it in a timely manner. Give the guy a call, and tell me A. How many weeks it took for him to reply to your call, and B. how many weeks from that initial call it took for you to actually SEE the stove in person.

I too have the Kifaru medium and I figured out a way to get those sparks to stop. Take the round piece of MSR flashing metal, and fold it out flat. bend a lip on one side of the circle. Latch it to the door of your Kifaru Stove. When you close the stove, it shields any sparks that come out the front air hole or the ridiculously large crack between the door and the stove body. I like that the stove breaks down, but for in my freighter canoe and snow machine, it isn't necessary. A small bar that fits tightly in the bottom of the stove also stops the metal from distorting inward. After you do this.......zero sparks. I won't buy another Kifaru.
