What a day outta Whittier

Can i ask how far out you went? i just have a little 18 ft sportsman and was going to head to either whittier or seward this week, ive done seward, but have yet to go to whittier. I am mostly looking for halibut.
dont need your secret spot (unless you want to share haha) just curious how far out they are
Took a long run to South Knight. Beautiful. Pulled anchor on Saturday barefoot, never put socks on. Cleaned and filleted my chicken halibut barefoot too. Sun burnt my shoulders, saw about 100 porpoise, salmon jumping all over, and whales putting on the best Sea World show I've ever seen. Hope I find halibut that close to Whittier some day!! Hope everyone had as good or better.:topjob:

The south end of Knight is one heck of a water show right now. Porpoise and whales everywhere. Lots of BIG halibut too...... Just watch your rods when the porpoise swim near your boat. We had one catch a line with it's open mouth and run with it. Talk about a wild ride for about 3 minutes until he spooled by Daiwa 2 speed. The good part was the line broke at the hook, so no loss there.

I had one strip about 500ft of line before I cut it. Happened to 2 other guys on the boat. They were eating the small halibut we were pulling up. Not a chance of landing one on my set up
Porpoise ate ur halibut huh... That is a chicken.
Have not seen an island called Rugged in PWS, only Rugged island I know is out of Seward.
Think he means that if he can make the distance to Rugged in Seward, then he can travel that same distance out of Whittier to the halibut.
Friday and Saturday were picture perfect. Nice yellow eye, about a 30-lb halibut. Naked Island. Long way for a chicken. Rough and snotty this morning, but it's the two previous days that I'll remember.

Went out of Whittier 2 times in the last week or so. Not too far from Whittier. Nothing very big, but had a blast with the kids, got visited by a trooper, and had a commercial guy swing by my boat for a nice talk and he offered/gave me a nice big fat red. The water was awesome both times. The pics are from from both trips. Nothing makes me happier than watching kids (and friends) catch fish.
We got skunked with halibut but brought home a tasty yelloweye with a shrimp appetizer. Was hoping to get a bunch of cod into the freezer but never found them. Did see a whale and a pod of feeding porpoise. A great day on the water.
Mind volunteering how deep you were for those halibut? We tried quite a few depths and bottoms but never came across any.

I've been anchoring up and been doing really well out there lately.
Check, guess I gotta buy more anchor line, and a davit.

I anchor up also. I also will play the waiting game. Not too many people want to do that, but I am just waiting for the pots to be pulled anyway. Good friends, good music, and a good beverage make it so easy just to hang around and enjoy the scenery!

I used to anchor ~ that is until I ran over our anchor rode and cut it free...
We were heading to Green Island cabin this weekend and stopped to check the fishing near Monte on the rising tide.
Fishing was great and action constant.
Got rockfish, yelloweyes and a couple [22# and 30#] halibut and we were off to see the cabin.
We were so happy for a while and the wife says "hey, why's the anchor rope still out?" ****! An double **** lucky too...could've been much worse out there by ourselves on one main engine.
Salvaged a great weekend at the cabin by tying off on shore and using an alternate stern anchor.
