Water filters and when to replace

So I have a PUR water filter (pump type ) that I have used for years. It's one I only use at base camp because of weight. My question is how long does the carbon/charcoal or whatever the heck is in them last before it needs replaced? I am not even sure I can buy a new cartridge for that model. Filter isn't clogged and I clean it well when done using. I have looked on the internet and can't find much on this topic. Any advice from the sages in the group would be greatly appreciated.

Ok then,,,,,,, but for a comparison number, my MSR does about 500gals +/- before replacement, but I always pack an extra filter in my possible's bag.......

Thanks Sir. Do you like your MSR? I was also looking at the Katadyn Vario pump filter and MSR Hyper Flow. Any thoughts on either?

Over the yrs I've tried multiple manufactures, and I keep coming back to MSR equipment, made here in WA. State USA, what's not to like about that,,,,,,,,, Balls in your Court.....

@ German...you could act as a field rep with the amount of MSR stuff you own. lol
Been looking at the MSR Mini Works EX purifier, MSR Guardian, MSR Hyper Flow and Vario from Katadyn. I'm sure they are all good. Just have to decide which one...The Guardian's price is pretty steep.
@Dave...I can't stand the taste of city water....been drinking well water all my life. Don't think I want to use bleach. Thks for commenting though.

Ok, thanks for the comments, and that Grab-Bag was a Xmas package for my Daughter and her Hubby, and it was pretty much what I've got in my gear,,,,, about Pricing,,,,,,, remember you get what you Pay-for, all of the MSR offerings are Field Tested to the Max, again, I've got "No-Dog" in this Hunt, other than I've just learned over the yrs, that the Cheap-Stuff will fail when you least expect it too, and at that point out in the Bush, or on a Mtn. Top,,,,, your thinking, DAM,,,,, I should have spent that few extra Dollars, So, that's my Story, and I'm Sticking to it.......

Yep. agree with that. I'm still using gear I bought 15 years ago. Buy it right...by it once...for the most part.

FWIW, household bleach does not work well on encysted organisms - Giardia.
*Most* of the chlorine dioxide tablets do a more complete job of treatment.

According to research, as long as ceramic filter is clear of debris and filter pumps unrestricted (flow is good), then purification qualities are still good.
