I have a VZ-24 (Czech Mauser 98) in my gun safe I bought a few years ago dirt cheap because someone tried to "sporterize" it and screwed it all up then traded it in at a gun shop. I was going to fix it up keeping it as 8x57, but thinking of maybe something with a bit much re thump. My next thought was .35 whelen, but I already have a 9.3x62 and a .375 h&h so what about .458 win mag? It is a long action so the cartridge should fit. I would just have to figure out something with the bolt. Would this be a practical build? Also would that 80+ year old VZ-24 action be up to .458 win mag?

My first impression would be for a cartridge that:
A. I can find components for easily.
B. Something that I could use for hunting.

Myself I love the Whelen. I have two right now and I find it kills moose and caribou extremely well.
