Okay, I'll answer part of this myself. I just found on Channel 2's website that I'll be able to receive their broadcast in February with my regular old antenna.
The way I understand it there may be up to 7100 low-power, class A, and TV translator stations that are not required to switch over in February. So you may or may not need a converter. You can do a search at this website by zip code to locate these stations or look up the entire list in an excel spreadsheet here . I'm guessing that most TV is broadcast on translators outside Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau. This is one area that the public education process is lacking. This is the FCC website that I did most of my research on http://www.dtv.gov/.
Stations that are broadcasted over a translator will still work after the digital switch. If I remember right staions will not have to upgrade the translator until next year.
