Went out to my farm the third day of turkey season, the first two were stormy, and bagged a nice big Tom..
I had put 2 new decoys in a tent blind the evening before and planned to sit and call from it. However the day didn't go as planned. First I get out of my truck about 200 yards from the tent blind about an hour before sunup only to discover I had a pocket full of 10 ga shells and the night before I grabbed a 12ga by mistake! Grr, as luck would have it I have a nice clubhouse on the farm and had some 12 ga hevi shot 6's for waterfowl in there so 20 minutes later I was back at the starting point. I had to hurry as the sky was starting to lighten up and about 10 steps from my truck a gobbler cut loose down near my tent! I waited and he cut loose a second time and there was no way I could get any closer so I ducked into the woods and waited until I could see the Tom pacing on a limb almost directly over my tent! Boy those new decoys work even inside a tent - remarkable!!! :) About ten minutes after legal shooting time he flies down and out of sight about 150 plus yards away. I gave my box call a few soft strokes and man did he cut loose! I gave it a second set of love talk and he was on a dead run to me! I barely had time to set the call down, grab the gun and boom it was over!
Nice mature bird, 11 in beard and 1 in spurs...
