I haven't hunted spring gobblers in three years and it's killing me. I saw a flock last spring near Sterling off the main road, and sat there honking the horn and getting the tom's to gobble, they were displaying the exact same strutting and mating behavior as the Easterns. They aren't skiddish at all. I would like to go and take one with a bow, that way I could be one of the only people to kill a wild turkey in all fifty states.

There is actually a flock that is apperenty breeding in the peters creek area. I have only see a few but the people that live in the area say there is any where from 24 to 90 turkeys.

Yes, Dennis that is now my new mission in life! I only have 44 more states to go. This is one aspect about living in Alaska that I truly hate. I would be hunting every single day during the spring turkey season. Next year, I am planning on a several state tour attempting to accomplish the Grand Slam with a bow on video. Getting one with a bow up here would be easy, just gotta locate 'em, right now they will be responding to calls and strutting up a storm. Turkey hunting is about as much fun as you can have in the woods. I really miss it. Maybe I'll take a short drive and go looking this weekend. I've heard there's a real pr1ck of a guy that believes they are his birds, blah blah. I am sure there are also the goofballs that think those birds are cute and local pets. Don't care, need my Alaska turkey bow kill.

Speaking of Will Primos, I've met him at a couple of events, and he's a very nice, thoughtful guy.

While living in Montana we had Turkey's everywhere. They were dumb as dirt. Slam the car door they would gobble. They actually came into my garage to eat the grain spilled for my horses. They were wild but no one hunted them so they were scared of nothing.
I could approach them and actually feed the things, so I never had a real desire to hunt them.
Having nothing to do 1 day I heard them gobble around the house and took out my bow and the rest is history. The wild ones were a little dry when cooked. I can now say I once took a Turkey in my life and am happy with that and would never spend anytime actually hunting them. I am sure these feral birds up here would be the same way and not much sport in hunting something you can walk up to.

No, these birds would not be sporting whatsoever, their disposition isn't anything like a typical wild turkey. If you so much as blinked wrong while hunting wild easterns they would be gone so fast your head would spin.

try spot and stalking those birds in MT now with a bow - they are much smarter than they were 25 years ago...still not as smart as an eastern bird in PA - but they don't always come a runnin.

and I haven't gotten a lick of work done all day. Okay, that's a lie, but I've been day dreaming of some past times. Turkey hunting is one sport that is tougher than most can imagine. Whoever said that you so much as blink, was spot on! Man, I've got some really funny (unsuccessful) stories of (trying) to bag those birds Maybe I need to drive up so I can make that check on my bucket list

There are a few of them around here. I know how they got started here too. Problem is they are not afraid of people, so not really a sport killing them. You can walk right up to a lot of them.

Did a bit of homework in hopes I could finally use up some old turkey loads & dust off the calls. I am sad to report that the actuall address is surrounded by mostly small private lots w/ homes. As bad as I wanted to go use my turkey calls I expect it would be a bit hard to try & get a group of neighbors to allow you to call them up to the front porch? Also a bit tricky to shoot "legally" in a trailor park? Private ground for a ways then native land beyond that. They are pretty safe unless you know someone in the area. Or you nailed one w/ your truck on KSR?

Now I can stop being bummed for turning down that hunting trip with Cuz Strickland and the Mossy Oak Team in Nebraska just because I wanted to save my money for Red Stag and Thar in New Zealand.

Al least I can run down to Kenai (Copper Landing) and take one out
Turkey Hunting looks boring on TV, but Spring Turkey hunting can be a ton of fun. It is a great way to warm-up after you spend a few weeks down in Unit 9.
Least that's the plan for next year

Before I moved up here I took a trip to the Kenai in August of 07. I swear on a stack of bibles I saw a turkey standing on the side of the Sterling highway somewhere west of Cooper Landing and maybe even west of Sterling. I almost didn't believe my eyes. I started loosing it for a minute until I realized there were some houses around and figured it must be a pet. I guess not.

Hey guys, just give those turks a few years to aclimate, they'll get spooky!! They were reintroduced here in Kansas, about 25 - 30 years ago. For about 6-8 years they were pretty dumb, but they have gotten a lot smarter with time. I don't now the history of them in Alaska, but if they can reproduce in that climate, in a very few short years, you will have a lot of big-o-birds hanging out. In the fall and winter here in Kansas, its not uncommon to see flocks of 80 up to 200!!! If you take the time to hot dip and pluck them, you won't ever want another store bought butterball.
On another side of the story, maybe they can help feed the bears and wolves and take some pressure off the moose. Knute

bout 3 years ago we saw 25-30 turkeys in that little park in cooper landing, by the kenai lake outlet bridge.....man we tried to kill one with a stick but they all flew away, and quick!
