Did anyone watch tonights episode of Alaska: The Last Frontier on the Discovery Channel? Lots of questionable things being done by the Kilcher family but one thing in particular that got me was using trout for halibut bait. Atz Lee and his wife went trout fishing and kept saying they were going to use the trout for bait when they went halibut fishing. Later they were seen out in the ocean cutting what looked to be a trout in half and putting the head on a jig. Can this be done?

The meat must be salvaged.
The heads tails fins and guts can be used as bait.
I didn't see the episode in question but using the heads would be OK.
Let's hope they aren't dumb enough to break the law on camera.

Yup, saw that (didn't want to watch election results). They are clearly illegal in doing so. Besides, trout aren't near as oily as herring and seem like they would make poor bait.
Thought so. I clearly saw them cutting the head off of a whole fish right on the boat. They were talking about using trout but I wasn't able to identify the fish for sure.
Thought it was funny that they would use 2 ATV's to travel 40 miles to catch trout for halibut fishing. Would have been cheaper to buy a couple of herring for the day. I guess that's reality TV for you.
I would think it is illegal also. Another thing they kept referring to was using salmon to barter with for other staples. I heard what I thought was three or four illegal things in that very same show.
It's like the gold miner's show. I believe something they showed on camera made MSHA or DNR come out and bust them for illegal activity of some sort.
Better be careful when you start your own reality show!

Saw the same (rainbow for bait) and thought that doesn't seem right.
Also noticed they kept at least 6 chicken's on the boat that I could see. (Must have had a proxy.....right!)

It wouldn't of mattered, you can't proxy fish for halibut.
Camera man must have had a license. They probably got a 'party limit'.
I sat there laughing while watching that show last night. 6+ chickens, standing in the high water of a stream literally in the waterfall "dipping" for fish...rather slapping the net at the water. 40+ mile ATV ride to catch 8-10" stocked trout and using them for halibut bait... :shot:
I also guess the magic number of pounds per species ( salmon or halibut) is 200-250lbs to survive the Alaskan Winter.

Did you see last week's show!? I don't think Dave has to do any freighting for them. They own their own barge!!! And don't they have access to East End Rd.!?
I watch the show because I think it's one of the best comedies on television right now. Most of the stuff that they show is totally incongruous when it comes to people trying to live off the land.
I didn't see that particular show with the barge...
It is a funny show for sure.

When I first saw the show I thought it was cool, till last spring when I was in Homer and drove by Kilcher Lane. Took me a while to put 2 and 2 together... They live 10 miles from Homer and have lots of neighbors?? Lost everything for me, I thought they really were, "out there" and on their own, never heard K Bay the first few time I saw the show, just head of the bay and what not. I will admit, I'm a Gold Rush fan tho.

I wasnt involved with the halibut segment, at least not with one where they caught any halibut.
as an aside, i had dinner last night with someone who was peripherally involved in the "House Hunter" (or whatever it's called) reality real estate show when they filmed in homer. He said it was a big joke... the couple who were "shopping" were not actually looking to buy a house, nor were the "sellers" actually selling theirs. All a total fiction.....

In a nutshell they barged (on their own barge) who knows how many thousands of dollars worth of excavators, tractors and various other equipment up the Fox River to install really nice fencing (that they obviously purchased brand new) to fence off the cattle they own and supposedly to keep wolves and bears away from the cattle. I can't imagine that fencing keeping a hungry grizzly or wolf away from cattle, but who am I to say?
And every time something needs doing on their homestead they always have the most modern convenience such as an excavator or tractor or whatever to do the job for them.
Or to go ice fishing (once again to keep from starving) out at Caribou Lake like a couple of them did last season they had a pretty nice snowmobile to get there.
A friend of mine that lives in Missouri saw one episode not too long ago and sent me a Facebook message about how cool it is to see people "living off the land" like that. She was under the impression that they lived totally "off the grid" and she sent me a very big "LOL!!!!!" when I informed her that they live about 10 miles down the same road I live off of (East End Rd.) and if they are starving to death (like most of the shows make it seem like they're on the verge of if they don't catch some fish or kill a moose) they could drive 15 miles into town and go to McDonalds if they really wanted to.
I could go on and on, but.....I'll just leave it at that.
