I used to use polyester underwear on backpack hunts, but am thinking about switching to a Merino wool blend such as the Ice Breaker Anatomica. Polyester served me well, but after 10 days or so in the field, they tend to stink regardless of changing them out every other day. According to my research, the lanolin in the wool is supposed to not allow the microbes and bacteria to adhere to its fibers. Has anyone used Merino wool blend undies or have other thoughts about this subject? The one downside I see of the brand I mentioned above is the price. They are about 35.00 a pair! Thanks!

Merino is where it's at. I generally use the brand they sell at Barney's - I think it's Minus 33? They're pretty reasonably priced. I also have a couple pair from KUIU. Regardless of the brand, they perform well and definitely don't get too nasty after several days of use.

I like merino also. It definitely doesn’t get as stinky as quick. If I am going to exert myself I will put a merino as base layer and then a wicking layer on top of that. Seems to keep me relatively dry and warmer than a synthetic base layer. Especially if it’s start / stop in cool weather.

Another vote for merino. I like the First Lite boxer briefs. Also LOVE their merino zip-off boot-top long johns. Start out in the morning with them on and after hiking for a little ways "drop trou", zip-off and back on my way. No need to take your boots and pants off to shed the layer.

I have to agree I love the merino boxers for multi day use. I am trying some new bamboo fiber ones as well. There are some merino blends on campfire, that work out pretty good for me. The legs are very tight though consider ordering up a size.

I'm surprised none of you guys say they make you itch....even a little. My daughter bought me a beautiful Smartwool Merino 250 base layer top that itches me a little around the neck. It's not bad enough to keep me from not wearing it, but I would think down there might be at least a little problem?

I like the wool and wool blends where the wool is at least great that 50%. Keeps you warm and the smell down. I have too many different brands to name them all. Each spring I buy whatever is on sale.

I wear ExOficio anti-microbial briefs, the merino briefs briefs I have tried bunch up. I get a little itching from the base layers on my arms, but not enough to bother me.

Thanks for the info guys.

@German...I am not able to private message anyone. The option isn't even available for some reason. Dave was looking into it to see if could sort it.

Are other people having issues too with PM's?
Yeah. It has been dead for several weeks, at least. My last PM was 20 November, and it died sometime thereafter. Same symptoms as last time: apparently able to tag onto/continue a preexisting conversation, but no option to create a new message to anyone. Doesn't seem like a function Enthused Digital, LLC is very enthusiastic about supporting...
