For generations we ran with the good old standby rounds that already worked well. Occasionally there would be a wildcat introduced that would find a following. Then in recent years many manufacturers seemed to think they would take the world by storm with the latest and greatest. Some new rounds were an improvement over the old, but generally only slight improvements. I'll stick with the cartridges I currently have which is a collection of old and somewhat obsolete rounds, and modern stuff in belted magnums and non-belted stuff. Hard to beat a .270, 30-06, 300 Win mag, or a 375 H&H. I have taken big game with everything from the Savage .22 Hi Power to the Winchester .405, .458, 45-70, 416 Rem and everything in between. I doubt anyone will be coming up with something that will make those obsolete anytime soon. I do know people get excited about the new stuff though, and simply must have the latest and greatest whizz bang cartridge.

And now the Lapua is starting to be eclipsed by the Norma. Essentially the 338 RUM just has to many competitors that are more available and offer equal performance.

It was a good rifle but I as far as I know this rifle was discontinued due to the high cost of production.
