Can you travel with a 4wheeler up there? Or is the snow still deep? Thinking about going up there this weekend sounds like the hunting should be fun and kinda easy thanks for any info.

You could get a wheeler in on the trail. Don't expect to go off the main road though. You'll still be able to get a bou around 9 mile. For the most part they are just wondering around by the road. I was surprised that even on Saturday when they were being pressured the most that they were still hanging out in the area. Keep in mind that I haven't been up there since last Saturday. Weather is calling for -20 this weekend in the Paxson area so dress warm.

View attachment 69017 View attachment 69018 my best freind had a tag to fill so us bros headed out last weekend to try and fill it! we drove 700 miles, stayed 3 overnights and were able to connect on a meat cow for my best freind karl:) who says 2, 17 year old kids cant do an epic hunt by themselves?! we pulled it off!

That's awesome! Finding buddies in high school who care enough or know enough about hunting are few and far between it seems!

Hey before I call fish and game tomorrow, this hunt is by application for RC566. As in I go down to fish and game tomorrow, fill out an application, receive the permit, and go hunt caribou?

Nope. Only way you can get the RC566 permit is applying for it during the draw process in November and December. You apply and, if there is no issues (i.e. properly filled out and not tossed) with your application, then you get a tag for the upcoming season. August 10th to March 31st or until quota reached.

What's the cow quota left to harvest?

Got back yesterday from Denali Highway. Got my first ever big game animal! He's a small fry but thats fine with me. As advertised the bou were all spread out through hungry hallow with numbers in excess of 200. They are grouping very close to the paxson closed area so watch close. IMG_1080.jpg

The recording is a month old

True, but there are no EO's. I called yesterday, it's still either sex for Tier 1. I know of 4 cows that have been taken since yesterday, but I still don't think it's in any danger of closing. Always good to call before you go...

Went out toward eureka and hunted John lake area. Saw 7 caribou but my friend didn't have time to make the shot. He had the drawing tag so couldn't confirm one was a bull before they got in to the trees. Was a beautiful day though. Good luck

Is there any concern from ADFG that they won't make the quota? Would opening the draw tags to either sex help? How many more 2013-2014 draw tags do you think they will release after this one closes short of the quota?

With 2 weeks left in this season, I wouldn't think anything will be done to "open things up".
Besides, they probably figure they have a handle on it with the extra bou tags that were awarded in the last draw.

If you have a Tier permit and want to punch it before the season ends, Paxson is the place to be. Went up there on Saturday and had our choice of hundreds between mile 7 and 14. Two of us went out and filled my Tier tag, his Draw tag, and a wounded buddies proxy Tier tag. Temps were cold, but no wind as was originally predicted. While the sun was up it was nice, once it dropped, so did the temps. Be careful out there. Road is almost reaching the point where snowmachines will not work soon, wind blown and bare in areas. Off road it varries, most areas you will encounter some rocks, but you can work around it. 4 Wheelers would even work in most areas as long as the temps stay low enough to maintain the hard pack.

We were surrounded by caribou at the Denali Highway parking lot in Cantwell yesterday. I whipped out the Iphone and downloaded the AHTNA land maps really quick. Those 'bou must have it figured out because they wouldn't come close to the highway right of way and the small chunk of non-AHTNA land there. They got to walk, but we did have a good time teaching the kids to identify cows and bulls with the binos.
