When I called the hotline today ( updated July 17th ) I interpreted that the Tier guys get to hunt cow or bull the first day on August 10th...the next day on the 11th it will be changed by EO to bull only. All draw permits will be one bull starting on the 20th...if anyone heard it different, please chime in! I guess F&G figures that every Joe Hunter has access to phone service, and should call the hotline before they head out. If it gets closed while you're out there, and there's no cell service where you are...???

It's the department's responsibility to put the information out there where people can get it, it's the hunter's responsibility to do what they need to do to abide by it. Maybe that means taking a sat phone with you so you can check in if you are in a window of time that the season might get closed down. The need to check for EO's isn't new and is pretty obviously stated in the regulations and in the permit supplement, so people should know what type of conditions they are accepting by participating in the hunt. I know where I hunt there is no cell phone service. What that tells me is that I either have to make day trips to hunt so I can call in from where I do have cell service or have some form of communications available to me that can get me access to the information (sat phone in my case). That is a choice I make by choosing to put in for the permit and by choosing where and how to hunt. Just because some regulation may be inconvenient to me doesn't mean I get a pass on following it.

Yeah I knew the conditions before I chose to apply for a permit...checking EO's is nothing 'new' to me, though it may be for others. Also I don't find anything inconvenient about the hunt at all, and I surely won't be passing on following any regulations, as I hunt & fish by the rules that are established.

I for one will not be making attempts by cell phone while out in th field hunting, the areas I hunt lack coverage and I do not hunt by phone! I will check the current status of hunt conditions the day I leave for the field and hunt according to that info. I think it entirely unreasonable for ADFG to expect that every hunter carry a phone into thte field and use it, especialy since coverage statewide is a very small percentage and spotty in "covered" areas.

There is nothing in the regulations requiring that a hunter take a sat phone into the field to check for updates, not to mention the fact that there are not enough of them in the entire state to supply the number of hunters going to the field.

Our tags say "1 caribou" on them and the regs say the same thing. There is currently no EO stating it has changed to bull only so until one comes out stating such, I will abide by what the regs say. And yes, I will be checking for the supposed EO before we head out for our hunt.

That was all before the aerial survey of the herd this summer. The hotline (also in regs and right above where it says 'one caribou') has already said there will be an EO.

None of this should be a surprise to anyone as this was well written and explained in the supplement and hunt details/description on the possibilities of this hunt being short or limited to one sex.

Not trying to be a dick but I already stated that I would be checking the EO's before we head out. Maybe you missed that part?

Anyone have a link to the EO about bulls only on the 11th?

Nelchina Caribou Hotline 267-2304 If I'm hearing it right, it says it will change to bull only at 12:01 on the 11th...I believe it begins at 12:01 a.m.

I don't think there is an EO yet. The hotline states that the EO will be issued on the 11th. It seems to me that you could legally harvest a cow on the 10th (with a tier tag of course).

Maybe there is some legal reason to wait until the season is open to issue the EO?

Quote from the recorded message on the hotline, "it is your responsibility to be aware of emergency orders prior to hunting".

Yes it sounded to me like they're giving Tier hunters one day to harvest a cow, then they will change it to bull only EO on the 11th.

Yes,according to the recorded message, if you are a Tier permit holder you get one day, the 10th of Aug. to harvest any caribou.

I didn't miss anything. I'm not confused or asking questions. Pretty simple, even if written in fine print.

With the (in)frequency of updates on the "hot"line (as demonstrated last year), a call before heading out should be sufficient for legal compliance; even for an extended hunt.

SIX pages of conjecture and yeti bs and the opening is still over 2 weeks away. Ain't the internet great.

Nothing on the hotline suggests that the bag limit for yeti will be changed... though the missing caribou suggest a larger-than-normal bigfoot presence in Unit 13.

Why do you think their is such a decline in caribou numbers this year.. Surely it wasnt the mild winter, or the hot summer.. It had to be the constand pressure from yetis trying to breed young caribou calves this spring forcing them into the lakes and rivers to evade molestation where they all drowned causing this EO.. Whats your take on it Skinny D :topjob:

It is unreasonable to expect hunters already in the field to take steps beyond their normal hunting travels to get/read an EO. I suspect that EOs for both the Draw and Tier hunts will be issued before the hunts open. I'm confused why they have not already been issued. There are thousands of potential hunters getting ready to enter the field in about 2 weeks. EOs concerning these hunts should have been issued by now.

There WILL be EO's issued during the hunt. You cannot expect them to all be issued before the hunt. For this hunt specifically, the biggest EO will be for shutting it down completely if/when the quota is met. You are correct that they should issue an EO as early as possible if they already know that it is going to be issued. Waiting does not make much sense for those things, but the nature of an EO is that it is something they don't know about ahead of time or don't know when it will apply ahead of time and thus must wait until that information is known.

Again, when people applied for the hunt, it was clearly stated that the hunt can/will be shut down by EO if/when the quota is reached. My reading of this tells me that I should expect to conduct myself in a way where I can check the status of EO's before and maybe even during my hunt. I have to take steps beyond my "normal hunting travels" to accomodate the regulations I agreed to abide by when applying for and hunting for that permit.

It's always been my understanding with the EOs...and especially the closure EOs, that there is some fudge factor built in. Of course, if its been issued prior to the start of the season, I can see it being harder to argue with a Brown Shirt as to why you weren't compliant with the EOs that may have been issued already.
