Well the hotline says EOs change all hunts to bull only and drawings are to unit assigned only. I tend to hunt late in the season and sounds like a chance the season may shut down before I go. Any chance they would shut down the drawing hunts but leave the 566 open? It would suck for me if it closes because I got this permit and would not get to hunt it, but wouldnt be eligible to hunt anywhere else in the state either, right?

The drawing hunts will be the first to shut down, but both would likely shut down about the same time. As far as not getting to hunt, that is all part of the gamble when you go for the guaranteed permit.

Bummer. I know they are giving 566 10 days to hunt before the permits so I do have a choice. But I think I will take my chances. Cause I like to hunt later. I do wish they would stop giving hotline tips on the caribou herds location though. What the heck is the point of that? Like we can't find them without plane spotters or something?

Does anyone recall how long it took to hit 2500 caribou last season? I want to say it was in late September or even when it opened back up after the rut closure.

I couldn't find any reports of when they hit 2,500, but I did find two other reference points. They hit about 2,000 on 9/15 last year (early season closed on 9/20), and then hit about 3,000 on 10/24 (season re-opened on 10/21). This was based on the 2012 Unit 13 Caribou thread on here (http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/showthread.php/117502-The-official-Unit-13-caribou-thread/page46)

Thought I would chime in here... been a busy summer! Now that I have retired from all other work, other than the lodge, I have been out and about a lot. Been seeing a lot of bulls, but interesting enough, they are all single. All the cows I've seen have been singles also, but most of the animals are single bulls. Doing wildlife viewing tours all summer, and nothing has changed since spring. Just really interesting, as I've not seen it like this and I have a lot of years in the area. They are starting to react and come to waving a white towel, so the instinct to herd up is there. Anyhow, I'll post if anything changes between now and then. My son, Bob and I, are heading on our sheep hunt Aug 8th to 18th, but we both have 483's starting on the 20th. Going to be a great fall! Good luck out there. Claude

Does anyone know where it how far back that main trail goes from on the denail hwy coming from the Cantwell side right before the susitna river bridge, will that trail get me far enough back to get to DC 481

I'm not sure about the ATV trail, but just looking at the map, wouldn't that require you to cross the Susitna to get into DC481 territory if you could get that far since the Susitna wraps around and becomes the northern boundary of the subunit? I would think getting there is only part of the problem, crossing may be the biggest issue.

I know last year at the start of the 2nd season, they were not over 2,500 yet and that's with cows still being available for tier 1 guys and no boundaries. I doubt that it is reached until Dec.

Have to figure in this year though that there is less than half the quota (2,500 vs 5,500 last year) and about 50% more permits (12,000 vs. 8,000 last year) out there. Last year, not many people were concerned with the quota being reached early, so there was no rush. This year the dynamics of it could be vastly different than last year. I wouldn't be surprised myself if it was reached a week or so before the end of the first season.

So the hotline says an EO will be issued. Currently, the reg book and the permits say one "caribou". When the EO is issued to change the bag limit to one "bull".........how will it be advertised so the average Joe gets the word? Will letters be sent to all permit holders?
I'm not aware of any legal requirement for hunters to check the hotline, radio, etc. for possible changes to their permits hunt conditions. If a guy wasn't a regular reader of this forum, how would he find out the bag limit has been changed?

Call the hotline or adf&g befour you go hunting. That why there is a hotline. It's up to the permit holder to be in the loop. But if I am hunting and they close it I will be still hunting till I get service, just my thought on it.

Check page 15 of the regs. It specifically addresses the possibility of emergency orders and that it is the responsibility of the hunter to check the status of their hunt prior to hunting.

EDIT: It is also discussed in a colored box for emphasis on page 7 of the hunting regs.

Anyone hunting is supposed to be familiar with the regs, thus should be aware of the potential for EO's and that they are as legally binding as any other regulation.

I know your not actually being ignorant MT. Its the same way with all Hunting/Fishing in the state. You must be in the "loop" with all current updates to each fishery or hunt. Now for arguments sake, i think your on the right path. How can ADFG expect people to buy internet and check daily on their website for an EO to come out so that individual can hunt an animal that he deserves to be able to hunt. Dosnt make sence to me. On most tags (minus Havest Tags) It gives you additional information that you the hunter must be aware of. That is ADFG informing you. Whether its a caribou hotline or actually checking online for an EO for lets say the closure of kings in the copper river basin. They should have a place for someone to be able to find out any EOs without having to buy internet. And poof... There is an ADFG in most bigger cities.

Be careful. It's very rocky once you get down about 10 miles. Until there it's very easy to get hung up on sand and gravel bars. There are quite a few people that run it with air boats but it all depends on the level of the water. On high water years expect allot of company. On low water years you better have good UHMV on the bottom. I may see you out there. Good luck.

PS. There are allot of angry bears in the area, so go prepared.

When I called the hotline today ( updated July 17th ) I interpreted that the Tier guys get to hunt cow or bull the first day on August 10th...the next day on the 11th it will be changed by EO to bull only. All draw permits will be one bull starting on the 20th...if anyone heard it different, please chime in! I guess F&G figures that every Joe Hunter has access to phone service, and should call the hotline before they head out. If it gets closed while you're out there, and there's no cell service where you are...???
