I'm kinda curious as to why anyone would hunt caribou during the rut as they are basically inedible during that timeframe. I had a buddy shoot one in early October 1 year and it stunk so bad I decided against shooting one. His wife wouldn't even let him bring it in the garage to butcher it. He tried to give me some of the meat but I wouldn't touch it.

I don't think anyone will argue with you as far as bulls being inedible when in the rut. The bull we took on Sept. 16th was in a valley all by himself and therefore I figured he would not be rutty. While I'll admit I haven't eaten any of it yet, there was zero smell of "ruttiness" on the bull or meat. The first thing I did was smell the ol boy up close - zero rutty smell. Probably shouldn't shoot them if there chasing or herding cows or into late September.

Nice SH. Those trips where you're faced with challenges and in the midst of it thinking "this sucks", are the ones that always stand out as some of the best experiences in life.
