out here they are

Allen out here the cacklers and brandts are all flocked up. I tried to order some brandt floaters from cabelas last night and they want 130 bucks for shipping. Anyone know a place in anchorage that has brandt floaters?

You might give Pat Nolde a call; he's the manager of Sportsman's Warehouse here in Anchorage. They have lots of dekes in there, but I haven't seen any brant. Still I'd call him anyway and see if he can order some up for you.

Though I love waterfowl hunting, I never have hunted brant before; I hope to do that some day!

Best of luck!

Welcome to Alaska (to myself). Just moved up from Iowa this summer! Hunted waterfowl almost exclusively in Iowa and had many great hunts. I've got the nonres small game license and ready to start out up here with the waterfowl, grouse, and ptarmigan this year! I'm living in North Pole, so if anyone wants to take me under their wing for a few hunts I'd really enjoy meeting some future partners! The move really downsized my gear, had to leave the boat behind, and majority of my decoys :-( Geese and cranes have been grouping up here beginning about 10 days ago and I'm getting pumped!

Where from in iowa? I moved up from a small town outside of Iowa City 10 years ago. I hunted Hawkeye and SW Iowa for snows and ducks.

Came from Ames, IA where I attended college for the last 5 years. Worked at and hunted Saylorville quite a bit, and Red Rock. Some fields around Ames were great for geese and we made our way to NW Iowa many times for hunts also. Down to Rathbun on a few goose hunts last year too. I grew up in Manson, IA west of Ft. Dodge though, some fantastic pheasant hunting!
Chased snows around in the spring in NW Missouri and South Dakota where we had some great hunts last year.
Can't wait for some new adventures up here.
Do many specs come through the interior? I've got lots of questions since I haven't experienced a fall migration up here yet, but I'm sure the best way to learn is by being outside as much as possible!

You oughta see a bunch of specs up your way, especially down toward Delta and the hay fields.
I hunted a bunch up around Esterville, I have a buddy up that way that grew up there and has hunting (and night time walleye fishing) dialed in. I went to school at Creighton over in Omaha, graduated in 97.

What brought you to North Pole??

ISU Alum....

ISU Alum....

Welcome to the board. I'm sure we hunted some of the same fields for geese around Ames...I graduated in 99 and hunted the crap out of the geese around Ames...man that was fun! Shot lots of ducks by the river south of Boone, and bow hunted like crazy around Madrid.

Welcome to AK...I was just there for 5 years and left to come back and bowhunt whitetails...now I'm in MN so the wife could be closer to the fam, but am doing everything I can to get back to AK for good.

What brought you up to AK and why North Pole? Just curious.

Seems this has converted to an Iowa forum, I apologize! :) Anyways, I lucked out with a job up here working for the government and natural resources. I worked for the same agency while in college in Ames and was able to transition into the job up here. The location was the main selling point for my move!
There was some GREAT deer hunting around Madrid, that place definately had the genetics in tune! I never did get up the river to hunt ducks, but heard of some good shoots up there. We mostly stuck to the mudflats at Saylorville and Swan bottoms at Red Rock.
Had a couple friends that went to school up in Estherville also, and tried dating a girl up there for a year; so I made it up there quite a bit on duck/goose hunts also.
I'll send you both PM's also, but it's pretty cool to talk about some of the same areas!

I've got the dog, the dekes and the boat.....now I just gotta figure out which end of this **** call I'm supposed to blow in! :)

I'm ready man! Since you're in the same area, let me know if you ever need a partner! I've got plenty of waterfowling experience and calling, just not up here. I'm sure there are several differences, but the learning is half the fun! I'm going to give a biologist a call one of these days and see what kind of info I can get on Minto Flats area and others I may not know about yet. I'll send you a message later. Gotta go to work now!

Not really a cyclone fan. I grew up a hawkeye fan and could never bring myself to convert at ISU. Had to kind of hide it for a few years, and now it feels so good to be full hawkeye fan again! :-D

Hey Mike, since you are in Northpole you should try and find the guys from Northern Wings Taxidermy. northern wings taxidermy they are pretty serious 'fowlers in your neck of the woods. There are lots of ponds along the Tanana between FBX and NP, but I don't know how much of it is private land.

Minto would be a dream trip if I was throwing in with folks to cover the costs of coming up from south central. However, will need a mud motor to make it through the weeds there and some local knowledge about how to not get lost once I made it in.
