Was there April 21-May 1. Fishing was good for steelies. Cutts and dolls started showing up toward the end of April. Word from the locals was that we hit the tail end of the steel run. Sounds as though they started coming in early on in the spring, like March. Hope that helps. Any specific questions, hit me with a PM. AK woodsman, your PM box is full FYI.

I briefly lived on POW Island in the later 80s.Never spent too much time chasing steel head, but know there were seldom traveled spots in more remote rivers near the salt water there that were excellent.

Just north of Klawock, headed up toward Thorne bay, is a small lake, back in on the logging roads there. The lake heads into a cliff wall at the far end.

It's been 28 years or so, but the logging road access to that spot is likely still intact; Bear Lake or Black bear Lake... Not far from Klawock.

I'd float a fir strip and fiberglass canoe there, putting in at one of the bridges on the logging road, paddle to the far end below the cliff, and, when the wind was blowing gently toward where we'd initially launched from, I'd use its propulsion as my trolling motor', casting in toward shore, near the sweepers that lined the west (?) bank of the lake, and nailed nice edible size cut throats there.

But that was a LONG time ago.

It rained hard the first few days. (Even the locals said it was allot of rain) The rivers were up and fishing was tough the first few days. After that wasn't too bad. Had a two year old along and we fished at her pace. Fish were where you thought they would be. Going back again soon!!!

Hi bit late to the party but heading to fish prince of wales for steelhead this year 2023. I was thinking mid April to first week of may? I seen your post indicating this might be late. Of course there are many factors in play but any advice would be greatly appreciate. I’m a very experienced flying angler. Happy Christmas

never fished POW, but most of SE that I've fished Steelhead are an late April to early May spawning fish. I would call fish and game and ask, they would likely give you pretty good info on when.
