Spring on the Parks

Drove the hwy yesterday and there’s lots of open clear water. Nobody fishing. Anyone care to share their knowledge on timing and location (mouths into Chu and Su or what) for spring bows?

Spawning for Rainbow trout in Alaska typically takes place from late March through early July. Although there may be places you can fish for them during that time-frame many anglers don't want to add additional stress during such a crucial period of the Trout's life cycle. So there's a bit of a self imposed restriction during trout spawn that many anglers adhere to, might be why your not seeing many people out fishing just yet on those streams. Based on your location Grayling, pike and sheefish should be a good holdover target species until the spawn wraps up though if your looking to get into some fish. Tight lines!

Fishing the rivers in the spring time for trout can be really tricky from my experience. I've had good days and bad days, but mostly bad days. Not nearly as much action as you are gonna get during the late summer and fall when the rivers a full of dead salmon and roe. But I've had decent luck occasionally swinging sculpins, smolt patterns, nymphs etc. It's just a matter of finding where they are at. Good luck.

Really??? That's unbelievable. I've heard of them going after flesh flies in the spring on the Kenai, but I didn't know they do that on the Parks hwy streams. I'll have to try that sometime. I don't suppose you would share which stream you caught them on?

It was a tributary of a tributary of a unnamed stream. It was a brutal 3.5 mile hike in.

One of the most epic days I've spent on the water was when I hit the smolt out-migration just right. Perfect weather and river conditions, and I could do no wrong as long as I had a blue smolt pattern in the water. This was at the Lake Creek/Yentna confluence the second week of May a couple of decades ago. With the way our climate is changing, the timing may not apply anymore.

I swing all kinds of ways when it comes to fishing. Seems the fish wanted the flesh swung, not dead drifted the other day. Hence why FG out-fished me.
