Anyone ever have problems with spring meat from bears that were on fish in the fall?

We eat all of our spring bears from PWS and they seem to be fine. No fishy taste or smell. Hard to beat the sweet smell and taste of the berry bears, though.

On a spring trip we took out to PWS in the mid-90's, we went 4 for 4 on blackies. 3 were normal, sweet, and absolutely delicious, but 1 was super stinky, just horrible.
Just skinning and breaking down that one and all you could smell was gnarly-fish saturated fat. He had had a good winter and had LOTS of fat on him still. He must've gorged himself at the last minute on fish after being in the berries, who knows.. The other 3 bears appeared to be normal in fat, not near as much as that particular one. Go figure..
We've taken a buttload of bears in various places and off of the big Su over the decades and have never had one like that. Again, go figure..
Ya just never know until you get it on the ground and get into it..

Pws has a lot of berries up high, I imagine they get a good mix. Black bears are not largely a salmon feeding bear even if they have access to it. Brown bears in the spring smells like a old salmon dog treat.

All bears are omnivores, color of the bear is no matter. Meat quality follows. Why bear meat is sometimes great, sometimes not so much.
Try to take a young bear (too small to compete with larger cousins for carrion or a fishing spot) far from garbage influence.
But dog food bears are pretty good IMO…problem is you gotta turn a blind eye to the whole “I’m making a problem bear” thing and let the bruin eat the neighborhoods’ dogs’ food for a little while

Hard to beat a (again, small to medium size)berry bear a couple weeks after they ripen

Worst bear I ever ate was a spring black bear on the Quinault River. Killed April 11th. It was eating skunk cabbage when I jumped it.
