Anyone fished the Situk yet this spring? Are the trees cut out?

Bob at the Situk Fly Shop has already started his blog for the year. Fish are starting to move in this past week

Slower than many would have liked over the last week. Fish scattered, sunny conditions made for very slow fishing except for early or late day efforts.
Came back with a tan, which caused some suspicion. Lots of fish moving in the evening. Big tides- not big #s of fish coming in. Fishing is probably awesome now that I've had to watch while my window of opportunity shut

Ok, just got back. Fishing was slow last monday and then it broke loose on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. Low clear water didn't seem to matter much. The fish are there and if you get a good dead drift they will bite. Thursday was off the hook.

This wasn't even the biggest fish.

For the poster with the Boga'd fish shooting milt...try treating the fish with a little more respect next time.

Holding a salmonid - especially a full-grown one - by the mandible can cause mandibular separation as well as detatch the hyoid arch. What does this mean? In layman's terms, you just killed the fish.

Try not to use the Boga next time, and cradle the fish so it doesn't begin to involuntarily leak milt.

Steelhead in AK are all wild, and should be treated with a high degree of respect.

It does appear that the fish is milting but I can assure you that it was just water dripping off him at this angle. As for the boga grip, his jaw was just fine after this pic. I would in no way intentionally disrespect a fish and do it no harm in anyway. Thanks for your opinion and it will be fully considered on my next trip not to use one. Thanks

gb steel,

It's not your intention in this case that is suspect. This topic (jaw gripping paraphrenalia) has been gone over pretty extensively and while they seem like a good idea compared to the flopping/dropping scenario, they are a far cry from two wet hands cradling a large salmonid when it comes to the ultimate health of the fish.

I'd advise you use it for tougher species, or for specimens you intend to eat. No doubt before long they will be illegal for released fish, I'd support it.

At least it isn't completely hanging from it in the picture, but I'm sure it was at some point in the capture and release.

Other than that, that's a nice fish, and glad you had a good trip.
