Installing a new windlass on my fiberglass boat should i put a plate on the underside of the fiberglass and bolt through it or is this over kill? Between the fiberglass and plywood core theres at least 1 1/2" of "meat". Thanks guys

Why not do it....can't hurt to have a little extra meat under there. The plate is cheap.

plywood(cushion) and a aluminum backing plate both on the inside to spread out the load. oversize the holes for the bolts, fill with epoxy or deck putty, redrill holes, seal with lots of 5200. you don't want any water seeping through the holes and wetting the core.

Yep. Go with Steve's suggestion. A little plate and everything seaed up will work just fine. Overkill? Maybe, but it sure beats not enough support an the major expense of that repair.

Yeah,....me too,....
It's one of those,..."Too Easy to add, Why not," deals

Considering especially the potential for Jerking\Working pressure on the Anchor gear,...

that's action that doesn't work well with plywood core, fiberglass finish
Slap a plate underneath there,...could be thick Aluminum (no corrosion)
and as Potbldr says, "plenty of flexible 5200, on the whole scene"

Steve,

You just scared the crap out of every fiberglass boat owner!

I second the backing plate idea as well.

Charlie you got nothing to worry about your boat is cored with air !!

Looks nice, Combos,...

Goin' for a Nose-Ring, eh ?

Did you glass in, the V-filler reinforcement on the inside, or was that part of original construction ?
