A couple friends and I are planning to go grouse hunting this weekend. We are thinking about the Willow area along the road up to Hatchers Pass, then I read this post by AKDoug:
"The gravel roads around the Talkeetna, Willow and Petersville area contain a significant amount of full time human residents and most of the property along these roads is private. It's often tough to see houses through the woods. Use caution when you hunt these areas. We are being overrun by non local road hunters that have little respect for private property and the locals are getting very vocal and upset about it. I would encourage any hunter that wants to keep this sport alive to stick to public land hunting and quit using the road system for easy small game/bird hunting."
So I am wondering where there is open public land for hunting along this road, it is at least 23 miles from Willow until you get deep into the mountains and I doubt it is all private land, I just don't know how to tell where the boundary between public/private land is.
Also, how about the other side of Hatchers Pass along Wasilla Fishhook Rd., any good bird hunting along there? I have been told Archangel Road is good for ptarmigan, but I would like to get some grouse also.
