A couple friends and I are planning to go grouse hunting this weekend. We are thinking about the Willow area along the road up to Hatchers Pass, then I read this post by AKDoug:

"The gravel roads around the Talkeetna, Willow and Petersville area contain a significant amount of full time human residents and most of the property along these roads is private. It's often tough to see houses through the woods. Use caution when you hunt these areas. We are being overrun by non local road hunters that have little respect for private property and the locals are getting very vocal and upset about it. I would encourage any hunter that wants to keep this sport alive to stick to public land hunting and quit using the road system for easy small game/bird hunting."

So I am wondering where there is open public land for hunting along this road, it is at least 23 miles from Willow until you get deep into the mountains and I doubt it is all private land, I just don't know how to tell where the boundary between public/private land is.

Also, how about the other side of Hatchers Pass along Wasilla Fishhook Rd., any good bird hunting along there? I have been told Archangel Road is good for ptarmigan, but I would like to get some grouse also.

good question

good question

I am relativley new to Alaska (2 1/2 years) and have asked the same question, How do you find out about private vs. public land. In Montana it was half the job of planning a hunt. I know there are obvious areas that warrant our diligence and good huntiing judgement to keep up our good graces with those who live there. I tried going to the BLM office and USFS but did not have much luck. I have not found the right person to ask yet, but I will keep looking. If you find out please help me out.

In regard to Archangel trail...when ever I have been up there it has been very busy with hikers, goldpanners, picnicers etc. Even they tend to spread out sometimes looking to "get away". Unless you pick a day of lousy weather it is difficult to find an area that is not busy. Obviously you want to get off the trail, but it still is not in my nature to hunt with tons of people nearby. The only sign of birds I have found there is in the winter when the dogs are struggling with the deep snow. So... it is possible but so far not my favorite. But then again, I am still learning...that is a good thing.

Well, we decided at the last minute to go to Sutton, as we didn't want to worry about too many other people in the area, so... we get out to Sutton about 21:30, it's completely dark and we try to remember what road to take to get up into the mountains above Sutton (it had been many years since any of us had been up there) and get completely lost. So, we end up going up Kings River trail in my buddy's X-Terra, we somehow made it to about 1 mile from the river crossing and set up camp for the night.

The next day we got 2 spruce grouse between 3 people, and saw 1 more that got away, and a squirrel that was fine eatin'; all in all a good trip. As a side note, one of the grouse had red breast meat and one had white breast meat, they were both definetely spruce grouse.

My point exactly..

My point exactly..

I started a thread trying to find out if its ok to target shoot/small game hunt off Buffalo Mine Road. I don't think I got any responses. If it's not marked I guess I'll shoot the place up and find out!

Tim

Not really, I was hoping to find out if target shooting is allowed; I believe there is public land back there.

Tim,

I happen to have a slow day, so I checked it out real quick and most of the State land along Buffalo Mine Road is being leased by Usibelli Coal Mine. I do not know the details of the lease, you should sheck with DNR, as it may just be for the mineral rights. Send me a pm with your email, and I will send you a map.-Andrew
