I know this isn't a popular subject and I'm sure to get some nasty comments. Why have we gone so far to the extremes, back in the 20's they had beer and shutzen matches, in the 1950s it was common place for people to have a couple shots to calm nerves before a pistol match. Now days even mentioning it or having an odor is like the devil. I personally broke records and shot my best matches after I had one beer with lunch. Why have we gone so insane with alcohol? Not everyone is a raging booze hound. Some of us just like a beer at the range, what's wrong with that?

There are a lot of things that 'used to be done' that are not main stream in todays world. Also common sense, does not exist any longer. I am of the option the booze and firearms are not a good mix!!!

What is wrong with drinking and shooting? If you have to ask, you are a total moron. Any substance that impairs cognition or reflexes should not be used when operating any dangerous equipment or firearms. Most traumas and assaults happen when people are drinking. Alcoholics are usually the ones who try to normalize it by saying stupid things like you just did about being a better shot after drinking. You must be a better driver as well, just like the drunk driver’s causing accidents but they thought they were fine. Ever met a drunk driver after a wreck and had them say they knew they were too wasted to drive? No, because they always think they are fine. I saw a guy with BA more than 6 times legal insist he was fine to drive home from the hospital. If you are around guns, don’t drink. You may be a nice guy, but the more you post- you come across like a total jack wagon.

I see your historical point and most folks these days see alcohol as something we shouldn't mix with firearms because it impairs human judgment. Society's norms change over time.

If you have to drink before you shoot to calm your nerves. you just might be a "raging booze hound' as you so aptly put it.

If you have to drink before you shoot to calm your nerves so you can shoot well, then do you drink all day long while hunting just in case you see something.

Back in the day when they got together for shooting contests and drank all day was a different time. A good time in history.

Not sure if this will help anyone, but maybe it will so I'll put it out there...if someone is at the point where they aren't steady if they haven't had a drink sort of "calming the nerves", they could need a medically assisted withdrawal to keep from going into cardiac arrest. If it is just trying to calm nerves, then breathing exercises should accomplish the same thing without the risk. Calling 211 (Alaska 211) is a quick way to get connected to resources that can help someone who might be struggling with substance misuse.

My experience is that folks who are drinking alcohol typically do stupid stuff. Booze doesn't make you smarter or faster, or better. It makes you slower and stupid. That alcohol isn't treated like the poison it is in our society is disappointing. (To me, anyway).

Back in the 20s-50s I would imagine there wasn't near the amount of gun enthusiasts that regularly abuse drugs and alcohol that there are today. For most I'm sure one or two beers wouldn't be a problem while shooting firearms. But that's just it, from what I've witnessed far too often, many just don't know how to stop at one or two beers. There's just far too many drinkers that believe if there's booze available then it needs to be in their belly now, with no thought of tomorrow. Besides, we've all seen how bad firearm safety has gotten at the range these days even without any booze around. Don't really need anything else to add to that equation.

Most of the shooting clubs and or ranges I've belonged to forbid the use of booze and or drugs on their property. I did take a "shooting class" at a trap club many years ago. They either had a beer bar or a beer machine. Seemed strange to me; after the class I never went back.

My gun club doesn't allow alcohol on the premises. And I totally agree with that.
Times have definitely changed.
And I just don't think we can trust people around guns with alcohol!
The one guy might only have one beer, the guy next to him might have half a dozen. What gives one guy a buzz may make another totally stumbling aze drunk.
I agree with the others that if you need to take a drink to calm your nerves or take away the shakes you probably have a drinking problem.
If you can't shoot well without alcohol then maybe you need to reevaluate your life in general!

I think its fairly common in the midwest that a trap range has a beer bar on site. However you aren't allowed to drink until after you've shot your round and are done for the day. Now would 1 beer impair an adult enough to be wildly unsafe, probably not. However there are those who will push it so a no tolerance policy until after you're done shooting has to be in effect. I am also guessing that from a legal and insurance standpoint it is required.

Also, I have seen some people have weird interactions from medication or medical conditions that they are very intoxicated after just a drink or two.

Funny story, a couple years ago my wife and I were out walking during moose season in a heavy rain, we stopped on a ridge looking over a creek bottom full of willows, and opened a couple beers we had in our packs...we just stood there a while, turned around and nearly fell over, there was a little fork-horn bull (not legal in our unit) standing practically right behind us like he was listening to our conversation, lol...

I wasn't talking about getting drunk or impaired at all. I'm talking about having 1 or 2 beers. I would bet alot of CCW carriers go out to dinner and drink. I'm 100% against impairment and alcohol. But some of us aren't raging alcoholics. And yes a beer or two while hunting is fine if you can handle it.

I bet half of the people who posted negative comment have probably drank and handled firearms or worse.
I shot my first caribou with my dad at 13 years old, shared a beer and we packed it back to camp. Idiots will be idiots, I'm not talking about being an idiot, I'm talking about being responsible.

The problem is it's kind of hard to tell how many beers someone has drank.
Is also impossible to tell how alcohol will affect each individual.
Someone else pointed out that sometimes certain individuals especially those on some medications can become completely drunk after only one or two beers.
My sister ended up in the hospital once for this very reason. Everybody else got drunk but my sister ended up turning blue and got a trip to the hospital out of it.
If a person wants to build their own gun range and go out drinking and shooting by themselves that's one thing.
But I will never support drinking and shooting especially at my local gun range that I'm a paying member of.
On a serious note why do we need to drink with all of our outdoor activities?
I can have plenty of fun and shoot just fine without any alcohol whatsoever. Same goes for fishing.
