Alaska Lanche Gearlist 4.0

Alaska Lanche Gearlist 4.0

Steve so you inspired me to update my list.

Looks like I will be going in with 58 pounds this fall and Becca will be at 48 pounds all up counting rifles and 3 liters of water apiece. Take the rifles and water away and I am at 45 pounds and she is at 35 pounds. We like to eat well so we are taking 21 pounds of food between us for 7 days. Basically I usually end up packing all the gear in except her personal clothing items and her rifle and she packs in all the food.

Anyways, here is Alaska_Lanche gearlist 4.0.

Could cut out rangefinder, crampons, extra 2 pound shelter for bivy/meat shelter, wiggy's booties and lose nearly 6 pounds right off the top as well as some other creature comforts, but many times 5 extra pounds of comfort items make it that much nicer for the wife to want to come along so I have no problem hauling in Wiggy's booties and the like. :D Plus I don't think I will ever get to leave the crampons behind when she is on the hunt anymore....but I can't say I blame her. :D

Hey Alask_Lanche, I see on your list that you have a Barney's Pack with the listed weight. Is that the Hunter pack or the Pinnacle? I don't have a scale to weigh mine.

Neither, its a combo of two different non-Barney's packs and actually I haven't weighed it since I added the waistbelt pockets on their side or the water bottle pocket on the shoulder strap to hold my GPS which likely makes it likely around 8200 cu in and 120 oz or so.

Here are the waistbelt and water bottle pockets I have added to a bunch of my packs as they are super light and big enough to hold cameras and what not.

Maybe somewhat off topic.. Whats everyone using for their baselayers on sheep hunts? Ive always used mountain hardwares line, but ive heard alot of people say they've switched to merino wool. If so, why is merino wool better?

You really have to try it for yourself. Most of mine came from steep and cheap. It wicks better, stays warmer (with a thinner layer), smells less. To me it is pretty much better in every way.

Does it dry as fast as synthetics? Do you wear all merino wool?

Pros of Merino-warmer while wet, very little smell, more comfortable, drys fast,

Cons of Merino-wears quicker than synthetics, does not dry quite as quick as some synthetics.

merino wool is all I wear.

I try to pay attention to sales because it's expensive stuff.
I have tried Ibex, smartwool, Icebreaker, and Minus 33. I think Ibex makes the nicest but it's very expensive. For the money Minus 33 is hard to beat. I have a pair of midweight bottoms that still look new after about 30 days in them. (warning they are very warm). I have also had good luck with smartwool. I have a microweight shirt, a microweight bottoms, a lightweight shirt, and a midweight shirt. The microweight is very nice and my favorite weight for highly aerobic activities however microweight will also wear out quicker. I can't comment much on the Icebreaker shirt because I've only worn it 3 times, it feels nice though and the quality seems high. I would reccomend all four of these brands. I get mine normally off of steep and cheap for the ibex, smartwool, and Icebreaker. For the minus 33 I get at barneys.

All advice is appreciated

All advice is appreciated

Disclaimer: A lot of the weights for the items are from researching the internet and reading the item labels. I am not at home right now and cannot weigh anything.

Currently deployed so when I am not at work I am working on the list and researching where to go for possibly my last chance as a resident for sheep in 2012. My first sheep hunt was in 2010 and I am hooked! Ebay and nothing else to do when not working is bad for your wallet. I tried to make this list exhaustive. It is modeled on a full 7 day hunt with EVERYTHING that i would have on me. The items in yellow are things I took last time and do not plan on taking this time.

I am trying to cut weight as much as possible. I already purchased the Plasma sleeping bag, it's seems like a lot of you have changed your mind about down recently but I am still not 100% sure that I would take it on a solo hunt. Do most of you carry a bivy to keep your bag in.

I love my Nallo 2 GT tent and it is a palace for 1 person. I am weighing the pro's and con's of switching to the Atko for weight savings. I love being able to sit fully upright and have plenty of room BUT it seems like the Akto would be a good compromise for the weight savings and a smaller footprint when trying to find a place to pitch a tent. Anyone who has the Akto please tell me if you like it.

Clothing is based on an early season hunt in the AK range. I am trying to get it down to 3 layers not including the T shirt. Medium weight long johns, outer layer like pants and jacket, and then my hardshell rain layer. I found that I mostly hiked in just the pants and T shirt. If I got a compressible, lightweight jacket then I am thinking I would be good to go as long as I have a good set of rain gear to cover it all. Reviews of the MH Compressor jacket say that it is pretty delicate but I can't find very much on the Supercub jacket and I know Integral Designs was bought out. Does Barney's have a replacement?

I took the plunge just recently and bought the straight Leica APO Televid 65 with the 25 x 50 wide angle eyepiece. Honestly, I just searched Ebay for the top 3 glass makers until I found a deal I could live with. I havent even looked through them but reading all the posts on here it looks like I couldnt go wrong with any of them. I can't wait to put my eyes on it when I go home for R&R in about a month!

Looking forward to any comments or advice on other areas where I can trim weight.

I am trying out some new pants after giving the Columbia fish pant that Alaska_Lanche uses and finding the thin material good but the lack of stretch not to my liking. Mountain hardwear ridge top pants seem to have the best of both worlds. VERY stretch and light with a comfy integrated belt. I found some in a discontinued color for under $30 so not much financial risk. Initial take is they are well made but I have not started abusing them yet! I will say that I was impresses enough after seeing them locally that I ordered 3 pairs. Worst case if they don't handle scree slopes they will still fill a slot in my hiking kit.

30 DAYS.......and counting!!!!......lets see some lists, and whats your pack weigh???

Finally got around to widdling it down to what we'll need. Looks like my wife will be humping up all the food we'll need for 8 days on the mountain (25 pounds worth) for a total pack weight of 43 pounds before water weight.

Looks like I will be hauling pretty much everything else and going up with 52 pounds before filling my water bladder up.

So lets see your list now Chuck as we are no only 2.5 weeks away from go time!!!

And noped probably can't talk me out of leaving the crampons home.....well you might be able to talk me out of it pretty easily but the ARE going or so I was told ;)

Mossy, Identical Barneys pack models will fluctuate ( don't ask me why) maybe more paint on some frames , I dont know, but I do know that with the pinnacles, the meat shelf comes off, also the bar is optional, mine is modified and has some gadjets on it but I was told the standard is 8 pounds for hunter, and 11 pounds for pinnacle in kevlar. I ve seen one Barneys pack go right around 6 pounds that was taylored, and was at 6500 cu inch.
