Take a few candy bars... good old fashioned snickers or whatever your favorite is. Never again will I be without snickers for a pick-me-up. I don't know who cliff is but I swear by day 6 last year if I had run into someone who introduced himself as cliff I would have punched him in the face. ;)

Agreed! After the last several seasons, I never want to see a clif bar again. So this year, I left them out of the food planning/packing entirely. Lara bars, trio bars, peanut butter or cheese filled pretzels and snickers all have about the same number of calories for less weight, taste better, and all but the snickers won't break your teeth in cold temperatures.

I am slowly aquiring my gear as I am new to pack style hunts. I am trying to do so while keeping the wife and wallet happy at the same time. I was able to pick up a new in the box, unoppened, SOTO OD-R-1 Micro Regulator Stove for 30$. Looking at it, it seemed very light, compact and very user friendly as it has an ignitor on it as well. I was just wondering if I got a good deal and if anyone has experiance with this model good or bad. I am also looking at picking up a Thermorest Pro-Lite 4, supposedly 2 1/2 inches thick and rolls to the size of a nalgene. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks
Ken

$30 is a very good deal! Retail is 75 i believe. Ive used this stove for the past 2 years on all my sheep and mountain hunts with zero problems. Performs great in cold weather as well. Good purchase, best of luck to you.

Since you have experience with the SOTO OD-R-1; how fastdoes it go through fuel? Also, what do you use for cooking/boiling water? Itseems like a lot of people like the JETBOIL canister as it holds just enoughfor a mountain house and a cup of tea/coffee. Does that same canister work onthe SOTO? I also see that there are some coffee presses that might work onthere so I am excited about that.

Also for anyone who might have one and can shed some light.. I just picked up abrand new Alps Mountaineering Mystic 1.0 backpackers tent and footprint for50$. REI had them for 140$. I know it’s not a hilleberg or North Face but itlooks pretty legit and seems to pack down small and is rather light. With thefootprint I could go minimalist with the fly and print only to save a pound orso. Just wondering if anyone has one or any experience with them?

Sorry for all the questions on every purchase, I am down range in Afghanistanand doing everything over the web so when I get home I am good to go. Plus Iwould like to use the many experiences of others to not fail to miserably on myfirst attempt as I know each trip will be a learning experience of some sort. Thanks again for all the help guys and gals.

Re: Sheep Hunting Gear Lists

As far as coffee goes, I tried the starbucks instant coffee this year and the coffee press stays home next time.

+1 on the starbucks via, all i use anymore.

100g's of fuel per 7.5 liters of water. NO the jetboil cup won't fit on the soto (without modification). I got a jetboil titanium cup and cut slits in the bottom of the cup so the cup locks onto the stove.

I have a couple of friends that have the SOTO OD-R-1 Micro stove and they have been very happy with them. The stove will burn less than a large canister after a week of hunting. Not sure what the daily burn rate is though.
For a pot we have been using the Stoic Ti Kettle, it will boil enough for your Mt House and a cup of coffee or whatever you want to drink, plus a pack of ramen fits tight in it! They are on sale at backcountry.com right now for a steal.

HAHA, Funny you mentioned that... I was on BC looking at some hiking poles and saw that Ti Pot for sale. I was going to ask how it was but I got my answer already! Ordered and in the mail... It's so reasonable that if for some reason I dont like it on the SOTO I can still use it for my larger camp trips on the fire or bigger stove etc. and get a Jetboil Ti and cut slots as MTNCLIMBER suggested.

Anyone have any experiance with the Neoair Trekker by Therm -a- rest or the Mystic 1p pack tent by Alps Mountaineering?

Cant say i have experience with a Neoair trekker but i would take a serious look at the Neo-air xtherm...I bought it off the extremely high recommendation of a few friends who have it. The Xtherm has close to 3 times the r-value and weighs less. my 2 cents

Just so everyone is tracking and can take advantage of it.... Backcountry.com is having a huge sale. Take an extra 50% off the stuff that is already on sale. I have found that most of the stuff is just last years colors etc. I got a Marmot Zues Down Jacket for 50$ as well as some other gear. Free shipping to AK too if you spend over 50 bucks, which of course I did. Found some good stretchy pants for climbing too. Hope someone else can take advantage of the sale.... Take care all!

Boots: I have 2 pairs of La Sportivas. The Glacier WLF and the Makalu. I also have a couple sets of Asolos. The La Sportivas have the removable tongue support. Something like these seem to me like they would work well. I have used the La Sportivas all over the mountains of Afghanistan. Anyone used these?
