Sheep Hunting Gear Lists

Ok so the winter is still long from over and August is still all too far away. I thought it'd be fun to compare and contrast all our gear lists. (I know I'm not the only one on here with one)

If we get enough lists on here from members we could possibly make it a sticky for new members to get an idea of what kinds of things different hunters bring on their sheep hunts. I'll be the first to put myself on the chopping block, for some "constructive???" criticism.

Notice that there is 3 different totals. One if if I were to go in solo. (Pack weight). The next is (shared weight) which is basically the items shared and halfed in order show the weight if we equally distribute the weight between myself and my hunting partner what I can expect my pack to weigh which is basically the "pack weight after shared" which is the first total with the shared weight subtracted.

Granted I haven't added clothing and food at this point. Haven't weighed those out yet so thats TBD. I'll update it as I iron that out. I was also going to put a dollar amount next to each item and totalize that, but then I realized it'd be a bad item to actually see how much money I have wrapped up in only 50 some pounds of gear. YIKES!!!

Also I apologize, I have this in an excel spreadsheet, but the forum doesn't seem to allow for .XLS files so I just copy pasted to Microsoft Word. Maybe a more computer savvy mod knows something I don't. In the mean time if someone would like an XLS copy, so you can input your own items and weights and have it calculate the totals for your gear, feel free to PM me your e-mail address and I'll send it out to ya.

Ok lets hear it guys, how bad am I messing up in stuff missing or not needed. I realize all this is subject to people's opinions, but I guess I'll be the first to be in front of the firing squad. So fire away.

Looks like you've done your research and been out there before.

I don't see maps, matches/lighter, or license. I always carry the hunting regs, too. It's amazing how often I think of something to look about concerning laws.

Are you carrying 10 rounds total for two hunters?

Thanks Buck. Means a lot from a guy that has hiked/backpacked more than most even care to think about.

Yeah matches, lighter, TP , contact case, toothbrush, license, unit hunted regs, and other misc items have yet to be weighed and I will add them as I find out, but need to get on the list no doubt. Thanks for bringing that up.

Also good catch on the ammo situation. 10 rounds is just for me. I updated the spreadsheet from my Kodiak goat hunt list which is slightly different and bring a box of 20 rounds to be shared with a buddy. So 5.5 onces back on the total weight. BUMMER!!

I'll play. I may have posted a version of this here in the past. Attached you will find a .zip file containing a 03 compatible MS Excel file. This is my "sanitized" list, so it does not contain all the specifics and weights, but I present as a framework for others to use if interested. I left my tent on the file so that one can see how the coding works.

Now the caveat emptor...No, I would NEVER pack everything on this list. However, I can think of a situation when I would pack each item that is listed, thus I add the item to the list. For that reason, I feel that this list is rather all-inclusive (save the food section), and I use it as a memory-jogger even if I am going UL backpacking for a couple of days.

I am amidst both a gear upgrade and a move, so I do not yet have a list with all my specific gear listed. I drew a sheep tag, so--in addition to the planning and physical preparation--gear has been on my mind a fair bit lately. That being said, I should be testing a fair bit of gear over the near several months; I'll keep everyone informed.

I agree, we should make this thread sticky...

I've been trying to lighten things since I drew DS204. Trying to get down to 40# plus my rifle.

The tab for food is what populates the weight in the main list.

I've got another list under construction that will show what is being shared with my partner (spotting scope, tent, etc.).

Once I get that finished, I'll post it here as well.

for packing hunting regs with you, good idea, but i hope folks don't throw the whole regs book in your pack. may seem light, but the ounces add up. just take the page(s) you need, get some contact paper at walmart and adhere that to both sides, thus making it waterproof. will save space and weight.

I usually tear out the pages that I need and put them with my license, tags, and anything else small (paper) that can't get wet in a ziplock bag. I usually have a little cash in there as well in case I need a little when I get back out to civilization.

Great idea guys about putting the Excel Spreadsheets in a zip file. Thanks for posting your lists as well.

So if you take my rifle out of the equation currently I am down to 29 pounds (shared weight). Add 10 pounds of food (10 days of hunting). Plus 3 liters of water (6.5 pounds). 3-4 pounds for extra clothing/socks, being VERY liberal with weight there. 1 pound for regs&license/toiletries/ etc. I'm looking at 55 lb shared weight, with EVERYTHING including full water weight, food, rifle for a 10 day hunt. Then add another 8-9 pound of packrafting gear if my hunt involves that. Seems like a lot, but I guess just more movitation to get my hiney off of here and into the gym and on the mountains to get in better shape.

Weight of food per day

You've likely settled on 1 lb of food per day from past experience, but that is very light on food, and most people are going to go hungry with only 16 oz. That's about half as many calories as a sheep hunter will be burning.

Speaking for myself, I like to go light but I'd add another 1/2 pound of food per day and cut weight elsewhere. It will help keep me happy, motivated, strong and warm.

Thanks Buck, no I just never really weighed the food I took in the past. Din't really know how much my average per day weight was. Another reason it hasn't made it onto my list yet. I'll keep that in mind for sure though. Much rather pack another 5 pounds well fed than be famished and save the 5 pounds. I like to draw off others experinces and hard lessons given the chance.

On another note, Buck I've gotten a lot of good ideas off for your ultralight backpack trip across the Brooks Range list on your website. But I imagine you have a sheephunting list as well. So lets see it.

You probably to not have Microsoft excel on your computer. If that is the case you will not be able to open the files. If you want PM your e-mail and I'll send them all to you via a word document.

Lanche...If that ptarmigan bivi turns out to be as good as I hope it is then perhaps you could cut the hilleberg for the long sheep hunt. Instead just take a wing style sil/ny tarp like tohe one from integral designes, it is going to be an early hunt anyway. You will also have the raft that you could use as additional shelter if need be. That would cut the weight of the packraft out of your pack. What do you have in your first aid kit that weighs so much? I did notice that the sat phone is not on the list, you could also switch to the cats meow and drop another pound over the glacier hunter. I sure do prefer the wiggys for fit and all but early Aug I have never been cold in my CM, Late sept on the other hand, brrrrr!!

If you don't have a copy of excel you could try open office, it's free open source software. www.openoffice.org and they have a spreadsheet program to view .xls files.

Being early season on that trip and that fact that my wife is coming along I don't think we'll mind too much sharing my Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 which is half the weight of the Nallo gt 3. Also we have some 1.5 pound 35 degree bags we are going to be taking since we'll be zipping them together to stay for additonal heat I'll also be saving weight there. This all sounds good in theory, but then that shared weight column isn't shared so evenly when packing with my wife, but some things are worth it.

If you don't have excel, you can upload the file to google documents. It will instantly be available to use and tweak.

I brought a little over a pound of food on my sheep hunt last year. When you figure in dehydrated food it really adds up. What I had was way too much and we were busting our butts.

I'll be bringing what I ate last year which totals out to about a pound per day plus an extra lunch and extra dinner (about 0.45 lbs extra).

Here's my list. Depending on exactly what I bring, I am at about 42lbs for gear including rifle. Food and water is on top of that and my buddy will pack the stove. I'll pack the body of the Hilleberg Tarra and he can pack the poles and stakes. I like to bring some real food like bagels, peanut butter and honey mixed up together, salami and cheese and I go with Granola with dried fruit and powdered milk in it instead of instant oatmeal. I feel a guy needs to be in top physical shape, have plenty of food, and get good rest. If I don't have those three then a 3-4lb lighter pack won't help me any. Pick your weight I guess. I'm willing to pack a little heavier bombproof tent and more food. With food for 7-10 days and some water I'm at about 55lbs or so total.

I really like your list. I'm gonna try and kinda steal yours and fuse it into mine some how in order to get the Included Yes/No option and still have my shared weight. This way I can put all the gear I might bring on all my backpacking trips and kind of pick and choose what I need for a particular hunt.BTW, that Zirkel bag is looking better and better at 1# 14 oz!!!

I hear ya on the food thing. I know you can do it on MH and oatmeal and powerbars, but its nice to mix up the monotony on an extended trip. Yeah I'm shooting for around 55 lbs all up too, but really should be shooting for less cause if the stories are true, you are an animal packer.
