Sending the rifle to yourself?

This might have been touched on in the recent past. But I am wondering if anyone here, with full knowledge or experience, knows if a person can send their rifle to themselves to an address in, Alaska. In other words, can I send MY rifle to my guides home for ME to use on a hunt? This would solve the TSA gauntlet, the extra airline fees and general baggage hassle.
So, can it be legally done?

I just relocated to Alaska and thought I could send my handguns to myself because I heard you could but it's not true as you have to have a federal dealers licence or a collectors licence to send firearms. You can have a gun dealer or someone with a licence send it to another person with a licence or dealer but they will charge you a transfer fee for each gun. You can check the UPS website and it will tell you or you can call a dealer and they can explain better what needs to be done. I've traveled with a rifle through airports and never had a problem or found it an inconvenience. Hoped this helps

Thunderchicken, MT just posted the regulation on it...this was just covered in great detail in the AK airlines thread a few posts down. You cannot send handguns to yourself...you can send rifles, etc.

If you used a commercial mover to move all of your household goods, you could have put your handguns in there. You cannot mail your handguns because you do not have an FFL. You also could have taken your handguns as checked baggage. What was more important, the clothes you want to wear or your handguns?

We drove through Canada so bringing the handguns wasn't an option. My wife made the mistake of telling them we were handgun owners but didn't bring them and they tore our vehicles apart and searched through everything just in case we did. I've heard police officers traveling through have suffered the same consequences. When I went to ups they informed me they won't ship any guns unless you have a federal dealers license. I just took they're word for it as far as rifles were concerned but I know now that I can't ship a handgun to myself, lesson learned ;0)~

As for UPS shipping firearms, I have many times shipped rifes for work to out-of-state repair shops and then had them shipped directly back to me.

I declared to UPS these were rifles and going into repair and the gladly took them.

I received the rifles directly back from the repair shop (in Montanna) and nothing was said.

So I would investigate further the UPS shipping, they will ship (at least for repair) rifles, I have personal experiences with this.

I have sent rifles to myself in the past through USPS and had no problems.

2 years ago I shipped a rifle to myself in Fairbanks using UPS and from Texas my UPS guy shipped it but when I tried to send it home from Fairbanks they would not ship it. I had a friend take it to an FFL holder to send it back to me, this was prior to learning of the USPS policy.

I have an FFL and use both the USPS and UPS. The UPS stores are not the same thing as UPS. Each one makes up it's own rules for firearms. The one in Soldotna refuses all firearms. I have to go to the UPS depot in Kenai. They have no problem shipping them. My preference is to use the post office. But if the firearm is antique you should double the insurance. The clerk told me that the post office will only pay half the value on anything that is an antique.

I doubt you are concerned with hand guns. As for rifles - last year I mailed a rifle from Wisconsin to a remote village in Ak. I mailed it to "myself", marked as general delivery. Perfectly legal.
