Self Guided Black Bear Hunt out of Whittier

I have been told that you can rent a boat in Whittier and make a Black Bear hunt by crusing the shore. I need opinions on this type of hunt and this location. Also the best month to hunt.
Is their a better option for a self guided Bear hunt.

What's your boating experience? For spring late May, through June, Fall season starts September first. The challenge is the weather that time of year, and knowing the sound well enough as to where to hole up to wait out a blow.

The boats they rent are nice, but $300-500 a day, so assuming a one week trip that's $2000-3500, plus fuel. You can get on a transported boat hunt for similar $.

Do the transporters provide a way to run around the bays looking for bears? I would hate to be dropped and stuck in one spot...and would also like a way to put down some shrimp pots.

The ones I have seen do. Mike Flores with ninilchik charters runs a couple of Deltas out there. They are supported by zodiaks. It looks like a very comfortable way to go. I believe they will feed you and transport you, but cannot aid in the spotting or retrieval of game. I would guess that they drop shrimp pots as well as halibut lines.

Looking more for someone to take a couple guys (maybe up to 4) and drop us. We would use our gear. Set camp. Stay for 5 days. Use thier zodiak (or whatever) to roam around the bays, fish, hunt, shrimp. Then come and get us at a pre-determined time given the weather was right.

We have our own camping gear and all else we would need. Would have to figure out the logistics - otherwise we may rent a boat and DIY it.

counting a couple guys who passed on bears 75% of them took blackies. couple big ones, couple little ones, and most around 5-5 1/2'.

For transportation out of Whittier, Sound Eco Adventures is a great outfit. I don't know if they rent zodiaks. On our deer hunt to Montague one of the guys in our group had a zodiak.

Depending on where you go, costs should be equivalent or better than renting a boat for the trip, and you'll have someone who is an expert in the sound running you out and back, in a nice big boat that has a drop down loading ramp so you get dropped off and picked up exactly where you want.

Just had friends get back from Homer and had a blast duck and bear hunting.

We spent a little over a week this spring cruising and looking for bear in PWS. It was a fun hunt and an easy hunt although we went maybe a week early and only saw 25 or so bears and only my daughter harvested one. Her bear wasn't huge, but the fur was fantastic and we will be picking up the rug shortly. I think we ended up stalking 9 or 10 times the entire week and my wife will always remember the sow and yearling which charged her. Our weather was almost perfect and we plan to continue with that trip each year, but hopefully get a little better on the timing. The guy at Whittier Boat and Tackle rental is a real helpful guy for boat rental, but I wouldn't do that sort of a trip on a smaller boat for more than a few days and I don't think a few days does justice to the trip (although if I hadn't had some gals along, maybe the comfort of the boat wouldn't have been so important).

Last week in May is a good choice unless the winter hangs around. I've hunted out of Whittier since having to put the boat on a flat car to get to Whittier, (per tunnel).
