So how is the parking situation in whittier right now? Storage for truck & trailer? I've not been down yet this spring so I'm looking for a report.

Thanks!

Parking is good. There is little snow this year in Whittier, so they have already plowed the upper lot and it is available for truck and trailer parking. It mught get rough as the snow mets and it turns to slop, but it was fine on Saturday.

Anyone know what the monthly rate is this year? Thinking about keeping boat and truck there all of May and June.

Not trying to steal this post, but wanted to ask where you pay for the upper lot?? I know the forms at the launch said BB lot, but when we put in late Friday night it was near impossible trying to figure out who to pay for where we parked. Fear city got our parking fee when we parked on private lot--we used the snow covered one closest to the mountain (furthest from water).

Thanks,

Hey Wildwill. Nice to hear you made it out. We didn't get out until Saturday due to a sick wife. Anyway, during the early season its not always clear where to pay for parking. Last year we parked right by the launch and paid at the launch booth. This year I talked to a guy in the lot by the launch and the parking permits were in the same place we paid last yeat but this was for the front and back lots. Kind of confusing but he was pretty helpful. If your talking about the lot just across the tracks on the right, during the regular season there's a booth on the lot you were in just as you enter to pay for parking. Its pretty obvious once all the snow is gone.

Hope you had a good trip.

I parked in the lot across the tracks on Friday afternoon; I paid in the harbor master's office. BTW, the harbor master is located in the hotel above the gas dock. When you walk in, go to the left and through the doors.

Is that a temporary location for the Harbormaster? Why are they located in the hotel now? Showers still available?

The reason that they are moved is that they needed to move their building due to the construction. From what I can tell, it is up on blocks and not accessible at the current time. I don't know if they have other provisions for showers, but I would not plan on using the ones in the harbor masters office for a while.

From the Whittier Small Boat Harbor site dated 4-4-2011: http://whittieralaska.gov/small_boat_harbor.html

City of Whittier Boat Harbor – Rebuild, Phase I – Update # 9 April 4, 2011

RECAP: Phase 1 of the Harbor Rebuild project involves using the pre-purchased sheet pile; dredging from the West boat launch to just before the City Dock; placing the sheet pile and installing new floats.

The Harbormaster’s Office has moved to a meeting room on the first floor, West end (tunnel side) of the Inn at Whittier. There is an outside entrance on the West (tunnel) end of the building, and blue and white signs are up to help guide you to us. SAFETY ALERT: During high wind days, 30 knots and above be very careful when using the outside/West-end door—the door is a challenge to open. The best entrance when it is extremely windy is the front side, single door at the top of the wheel-chair accessible ramp. Parking for office business is across from the Inn at Whittier.

The parking lot from the Marine Travel Lift to just before the East Gangway has been blocked off for construction staging area and contractor’s use.
Parking during March and April will be limited. Vehicle parking will be up against the curb on the East-end of the Harbor parking lot near the East Gangway. The construction staging area will recede as the project progresses and more parking area will be available. Winter/Spring trailer parking will be on the East end of the Harbor parking lot—red and white signs will designate the trailer parking. Please park vehicles with trailers in the North/South direction. Check with the Harbormaster’s Office staff for updated parking information.

Current status of rebuild-phase I: The sheet pile installation is expected to be completed by mid April.

Other Harbor Business: Potable water is being supplied once a week. The schedule was set for Thursdays between 1pm and 3pm; but has been flexible due to weather conditions. Such as, last Thursday, March 24 when all Public Work’s employees were out on the streets of Whittier taking care of snow removal. They had the water available on Friday instead. There is no call-out fee for our moorage customers in the Harbor basin.

Public Works does have a call-out and fee schedule for non-moorage customers that are provided water on the Ocean Dock (by the Ferry terminal) or at the DeLong Dock.

I was sitting in the hotel yesterday and a guy was talking on his cell phone that the project that was being done to dredge in the small boat harbor could be delayed until September because of the tides and that the contractor was behind schedule. So you parking lot could be messed up all summer.
